Re: should oscar pistorius be allowed to compete at olympics AND paralympics?Fair point.(Original post by SirMasterKey)
If he goes I just want to compete in the Olympics it makes it look like the Paralympics has smaller value which would be a shame. If he wants to do both than he is showing that both are as worthy as each other.
He really had to battle with the IOC to get into the olympics even with his qualifying time being ok. I am sure they will be regulated so that he has no advantage.(Original post by boba)
I was quite surprised when I googled him to find hes a sprinter with prosthetic legs, I don't think he should be allowed to compete in the olympics. not for running anyway. The better technology gets the faster he will be able to run, yes he might be an incredibly athlete anyway ( which of course he will be since he was fast enough to qualify which most people with artificial legs wont be)but its still hardly fair. -
Re: should oscar pistorius be allowed to compete at olympics AND paralympics?ok like I said I didn't know who he was until I did a quick google image of him. If he is in fact required to wear prosthetics that are comparable to an actual human leg then I suppose that is ok.(Original post by SirMasterKey)
Pretty sure he can't upgrade his blades so why should that be a problem?
His current ones I think had tests done which found no significant advantage was gained by them. -

Fair point.

Re: should oscar pistorius be allowed to compete at olympics AND paralympics? No advantage? He would struggle to run without them I reckon(Original post by SirMasterKey)

From a scientific perspective, in most components of sprinting Pistorius has an unfair advantage.
One of the main things that sets him apart from able-bodied sprinters is that his leg-swing times (the time taken between each foot contacting the ground) are significantly shorter than that of able bodied sprinters. This is mainly due to the lightness of his blades compared to a human leg.
Once a person reaches top speed, all able-bodied individuals have basically the same swing times. This means that you have the same leg swing times are Usain Bolt does (you just spend more time in contact with teh ground and exert less force when you do contact the ground). However, Oscar Pistorius has significantly shorter leg swing times than an able-bodied individual (about 20% less). This means Pistorius is able to leave his foot in contact with the ground for longer, and thus generate higher force due to his ability to make up time during the swing phase. Two posts above your reply, you should read the whole thread before you comment.(Original post by SirMasterKey)

Re: should oscar pistorius be allowed to compete at olympics AND paralympics?
He only got in because he appealed not because he was allowed to due to his time (as crappy as it was). The IOC bent the rules just for him, but i doubt he will be back in Rio. He should stick to the paralympics if he wants to win a medal because utlimately an amputee isn't going to win in a Final against able-bodied Athletes. He totally nicked a semi-spot from one of the slower able-bodies though due to his blades tiring him less on the Home straight. I don't understand the people who think he's inspirational or think he deserves to be in the main Olympics. Probably the same people who fall for talent show sob stories. Any-who, neg away!

Re: should oscar pistorius be allowed to compete at olympics AND paralympics?I think it's a bit harsh to say the Paralympics are for disadvantaged people who have no hope of making the Olympics. It's basically the Olympic games for those with disabilities. Although Pistorius is a rare example, he has shown that in certain circumstances he can compete with able-bodies athletes so it should be fair for him to compete in the Olympics and Paralympics as he is disabled.(Original post by desijut)
He made the qualifying time for the olympics so he should be allowed to compete, irregardless of disabilities.
Paralympics.. hmm.. It's tricky, technically he qualifies as he has a disability, but maybe a rule where if you qualify for the olympics you cant participate in the paralympics? Since the paralympics are there for disadvantaged people who have no hope of making the olympics I think that rule is fair -

Re: should oscar pistorius be allowed to compete at olympics AND paralympics?
Hmmm... It's all well and good saying he should compete because he's an inspiration, but I don't see why he can't just compete in the Paralympic games. If he's faster than the able-bodied, then that's a big plus for the Paralympics.
I think he's an inspiration, but I would truly admire him if he aided the Paralympics because they are underfunded and underapreciated. -
Re: should oscar pistorius be allowed to compete at olympics AND paralympics?
In my opinon no. I mean if you let someone with prosthetic legs in then where do you draw the line? The comp is to see who the best able-bodied athlete is not the best able-bodied athlete or the best athlete with prosthetic legs.

So South Africa were tripped in the second leg of the 4x400 semis and didn't finish the race. But they got a place in the final on appeal. Is this a normal thing to do, or is it just because Pistorius is in the team? The BBC article on this is just about him
