Beijing was a fluke, they said.
We're currently third. If there weren't so many swimming events, we'd have a great chance at coming second.
We're currently 7 gold medals infront of France and have so many more medal hopefuls yet to come.
I think we're going to become Olympic winning contenders from 2016 onwards.Last edited by Miracle Day; 04-08-2012 at 21:48. -
Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.
We have improved dramatically in the past few years but our swim team need to step up otherwise it's going to be extremely hard to compete with the US/China. There's just way too many medals up for grabs in the swimming events and we simply aren't strong enough to go for them like the US/China do.

Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.I agree. Gary Lineker mentioned this earlier, I really hope more investment goes into swimming.(Original post by explicit4u)

I think this olympics has done its job and our swim team can only get stronger to be honest.
We've done very well and I'm really pleased for GB. However a number of the few 'big' countries aren't doing particularly well this time: Russia, Australia, even Japan. Their lack has worked to our advantage. -
Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.Whilst I agree our efforts this Olympics have been spectacular - don't get too ahead of yourself.(Original post by Miracle Day)

Winning contenders!? No hope in hell.
I think we may be able to cement a place in third though.
I disagree, all we need is a Phelps and we can get first Imo(Original post by crocker710)

We're doing fantastic but I'm not sure whether he can improve so much in 4 years that we could win the olympics -
Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.
GB Swimmers suck well the Women do, the Men are alright. Adlington's Golds were a fluke so Bronze seemed alright and the Women's relay were diabolical! Time for more Athletic Academies in the UK and none of this moving to the USA or Portugal to train.

Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.I'd have to disagree, without others such as Lochte and Grevers for teamwork in relays and other 200m and 400m events there wouldn't be as many Golds so you can't really just have one great athlete(Original post by Miracle Day)

Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.China, 1 gold behind first place gained 4 gold from swimming events.(Original post by Miracle Day)

The USA gained 16 golds from swimming.
Even if we did gain more golds in the pool China would still slap us back down into third. -
Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said. All (!?) we need is an athlete to break olympic gold medal records? Right, that's easy enough to do... Just get a few of our swimmers training a bit harder and they'll breeze through in Rio...(Original post by Miracle Day)

You are aware of the big gulf between 1st/2nd and 3rd? Even we manage to locate a new athlete who gets 8 golds in one games, we still wouldn't catch up to 1st. We'd need at least 2 of them! -
Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.No. But if we heavily invest in swimming finding a record breaking athlete is more than possible. Yes I know we need atleast 2 of them, but as Gary Lineker said earlier and his swimming commentator.. hopefully we can leave with a plan to do better from now on and that'd obviously be heavily investing in swimming.(Original post by callum9999)

Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.If we took 8 golds off the Americans, that would be enough to catch up with them, at least in gold count.(Original post by callum9999)

Re: Beijing was a fluke, they said.lets not gett ahead of ourselves, USA and China have a MUCH larger pool of talent, and are much better in the pool (which can really make or break an olympics)(Original post by Miracle Day)
