Replacing Speakers in VW MK6 Golf ?!?!?!?!
Hey guys. So i just got a MK6 golf and the speakers in the front door are pretty piss poor. I want to replace them so i have bought a 6.5 inch Vibe speakers. I know i have to take the door panel off but the thing is the speakers are riveted onto the door. How do i take them off safely using a rivet gun and how do i install the new speakers in ?

    Any help would be amazing

I answered a similar question yesterday... someone I know has a VW Polo and the speakers are the same in that.

Are you using the original head unit? If so, a lot of people seem to find that the speakers VW use aren't actually that bad, the headunits just make them sound terrible somehow. You may need an adapter for the HU as the old one will be a proprietary size probably. You could also try installing a subwoofer.

I've upgraded the speakers on my own car, and it makes barely any difference tbh. The subwoofer made a world of difference though.

If you still want to upgrade the speakers, you have to drill the rivets out. Then you'll need some speaker adapters, like these. Install the adapter into the door, then install the speakers into them, and wire them up. Give the speakers a quick test (use balance/fader to check individual speakers), and if all is well, put the door panels back on.

btw would those speaker adapters fit the MkVI ? I cant seem to find any MkVI specific adapters online. Does the MkV and MkVI have the same layout speakers wise ?

Those adapters I linked to are 165mm or 6.5", which are the same size as the Golf Mk6, so they should fit straight in.

I've not done anything with VW speakers, but a rivet gun is used to install rivets, not to remove them. To remove them you've got two options: drill or chisel. Drill is pretty simple - get a bit larger than the small hole in the centre but smaller than the rivet head and spin. Unfortunately that normally means the rivet spins round and round which is pretty frustrating! Other option is to use a gash chisel to just cut the head off the rivet. Won't do the the chisel much good but will get the rivet off cleanly.

I have a JBL GT5-12 12" Subwoofer (from what I can find it's currently cheapest at halfords), with a sealed enclosure (£20-£30, or you can make one yourself if you're confident enough), a cheap 75w RMS amp that someone gave me for free (the subwoofer can handle 275w RMS, or a massive 1100W peak), and a wiring kit from maplin (£30).

I have the subwoofer level set to 5/15 on my HU, and even though it's only on a 75w amp, it's more than loud enough, I used to have it louder but it vibrated so much that the wires on the amp would disconnect themselves!

You can purchase this sub with an enclosure included for £60 here
You'll also need an amp of some description. The sub above requires a 4-ohm amp, something like this would be perfect, but you can use any amplifier that can output 4 ohms, a mono or bridgeable 2-channel amp would be best however.
You'll need a wiring kit, alternatively you can buy lengths of different cables from somewhere like maplin, it will probably end up more expensive that way though.
If you're still using the stock HU, or another HU that doesn't have pre-outs for an amplifier, you will need to find an amp with speaker level inputs.

Also, forgot to mention, if you need your boot space, you can also get subs which fit under your front seats, like these: http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/cate...fer_c-2483.htm

Another option for subs is the active route. These subs have built in amps which mean the sub and amp are always perfectly matched and all you have to do is run power cables and RCAs, and then set the levels. Something like this: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_265873
although seems to cost you a little more to start with comes with everything you need so long as your Head Unit has pre-amp outs. It's not going to be earth shattering, but it'll give you a decent thump.

That HU looks amazing, I don't think you'll be disappointed. That sub looks very good as well.

I thought car audio security was just an online thing, didn't know they did fitting. Although it wouldn't be convenient for me as it'd take me almost 3 hours to get there

Does the HU have a radio code which locks it if it's disconnected from power, and/or does your car have an alarm? If so, I doubt anyone would even try and steal it.

I leave the front panel of my HU attached all the time and no one has tried to steal yet.
