Ringing med schools results day 16th aug
Hi there. I applied earlier this year with no avail. If i get my AAA is it worth ringing up the Med schools i applied to on results day. Or is it a waste of time?

No expert here but I think medical schools give more offers than places so it is very unlikely for you to get a place. Although you may be extremely lucky and get a place. No harm in trying if your not busy in my opinion... good luck!

As the above has said -almost all courses, not just medicine, give out more offers than places as some will decline the place, some will put as insurance, and some will miss their grades. So chances are, they will be slightly over-subscribed if anything (certainly has been UCL's case in the past two years) because if you meet their offer they are obliged to give a place due to the contract signed with UCAS.

And also some will probably then give priority to those they did give offers to, but who missed them. And it's probably only worth you ringing up to those you've applied to as they'll have your records on file. But don't be disheartened if you get blanket "no"s as your replies, as it is a very long shot - especially if you didn't make it to interview stages with the respective medical schools.

Yeah i wouldn't bother. Medicine is just way too competitive. if you did find anywhere it would be at a really bad school.

There is no such thing as a bad medical school, at least as far as the UK is concerned.

It's too fierce the competition and they would most likely give it to people who had an interview, was unsuccessful and put on a waiting list which a lot of universities do and give them the place if they have the grades.

In summary: There is probably little chance, but that little chance is worth the risk and it costs you nothing. Have a go, eh? Let us know how you get on Failing that, don't forget there is this year to reapply -- many applicants get through on their second application. Keep it up!

    This.

It costs you nothing but a few hours of your life? Do it. This was me last year. My teachers were so uninformed and they guaranteed I'd get in on results day once they saw my results, suddenly i had so much hope and started calling all the medical schools in the UK. I didnt have any luck, not even from the unis i had initially applied to or even the one that gave me an interview and then placed me on hold. Medicine has insane competition. I reapplied this year though and got 3/3 interviews and am starting this Sept. If you're set on medicine too, maybe try this route? There is no guarantee though, there are plenty of people in my position who didn't get in. You need to weigh up the pros and cons and do whats best for you. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up. I will definitely reapply if i get my grades. I've heard of Med schools which automatically interview applicants with their grades in hand. Is this true? If so which unis?

Hello there. Its you again! Lol. Yes i can't help but worry till results day. Do peninsula also look at work experience and Ukcat or is it strictly a level grades? I've got nhs work exp. I have a role coming up in which i will be feeding patients and monitoring fluid levels. As well as ABA( association of blind Asians) and the british red cross lined up. I really hope i get an offer this year.

Peninsula don't look at the work experience, the only way they would know is if you decided to mention it in your interview. For applicants offering predicted grades the UKCAT is also used to short-list applicants for interview. If you have the grades in hand then it isn't used. Remember Peninsula has split in to two separate medical schools.

OK cool. So does the ukcat score be used, if at all for re applicants with 3As?

No. This is mentioned in their admissions manual. Applicants who apply using grades that have already been achieved need not sit the UKCAT examination.

Been there, done it, unfortunately. This was me last year. Most of the Med Schools I rung up immediately said they didn't have places left. There was one exception though - Liverpool. I called and asked whether there were any places left in clearing, and the lady said 'Ah, but have you got the Grades?!'. When I replied I had, she put me through to the Main Admissions tutor, who then said there were no places left . So I think there might have been one or two places left over, and I just missed it. I'll never know...

On the other hand, there were rumors that Leicester had a place or two left, but I never rang, so I don't know whether there's any truth to that. Anywhoo, there's always next year OP...
