Decided I'd change it, to see who's the greatest sportsperson as people seem to be saying it's Michael Phelps.

As much as a farce swimming is with the number of medals, Phelps is a multiple winner in 3 Olympics. He's a legend. It's unfair to compare Ennis to him.

Typical British attitude, totally lose context of everything and become experts after a few days of watching sports lol

Who's the greater sportsperson? Phelps has 18 gold medals - I don't think it's a difficult decision between these two.

All these discussions of the greatest of all time, however, are irrelevant as you cannot compare.

Who is to say that one of them is the greatest sports person? You're now getting olympian and sportsperson completely confused

But.. would we have gotten a gold if she wasn't injured in Beijing?

I'm not sure.. I've seen people arguing for and against and found it interesting.

    You mean Olympian?

Otherwise, I'd say that currently Bradley Wiggins is.

In my opinion Ennis. If there were not so many events for swimming, Phelps wouldn't have got so many medals. Ennis has excelled at seven different disciplines, Phelps has done so in one.
    Just in my opinion though.

Phelps swims, Ennis does a variety of things for only one medal.

    Though this topic is silly.

The fact she was injured is irrelevant. You have to win a gold to win a gold. She's won ONE gold whereas Phelps has obliterated the competition in two Olympics, in MULTIPLE events and he's got Gold consistently in three Olympics (the heptathlon is awesome all round athleticism but it's still one event).

The comparison is rather silly hence the comment about experts.

    Actually they are comparable.

Ennis excels in 7 different sports, Phelps does in one. All the different variations in swimming doesn't count as a different sport to be honest.

if jess ennis competed at the individual events of at least two of the disiciplines she done at the hepthalon and won gold in them, then she has a case

Stupid thread tbh, OP have you actually watched the Olympics before this year, or just trying to argue a stupid, meaningless debate.

She didn't compete in 7 individual events. For example, did she long jump against long jump specialists?

I'd take her medal over Phelps as it's all round but Phelps is a multiple Olympic legend. No comparison really.
