As much as a farce swimming is with the number of medals, Phelps is a multiple winner in 3 Olympics. He's a legend. It's unfair to compare Ennis to him.

In my opinion Ennis. If there were not so many events for swimming, Phelps wouldn't have got so many medals. Ennis has excelled at seven different disciplines, Phelps has done so in one.
Just in my opinion though.

The fact she was injured is irrelevant. You have to win a gold to win a gold. She's won ONE gold whereas Phelps has obliterated the competition in two Olympics, in MULTIPLE events and he's got Gold consistently in three Olympics (the heptathlon is awesome all round athleticism but it's still one event).

Actually they are comparable.

Ennis excels in 7 different sports, Phelps does in one. All the different variations in swimming doesn't count as a different sport to be honest.

Just in my opinion though.

She didn't compete in 7 individual events. For example, did she long jump against long jump specialists?

I'd take her medal over Phelps as it's all round but Phelps is a multiple Olympic legend. No comparison really.
