A2 GCE English Literature coursework, AO4 help!
    Hello

I was wondering if anyone knew what this AO4 requirement means/what they want you to include:

'AO4: Excellent understanding of contexts of reception with detailed links between context/text/task'
    And,
'AO4: Excellent understanding of possible contexts of production with detailed links between context/text/task'

I don't remember encountering any of these AO's last year in AS coursework. Do they want me to include some critical reviews i.e. quotes from poetry critics from newspapers etc. Or do they want me to include some of the poet's ideas including their quotes?

    I appreciate any help
    Thanks!

Is this for AQA? What's the essay question?

Context is easy to slot in. For example, I did 'Top Girls' at AS in my coursework and just waffled about how it was set in a society where politics were changing and women were beginning to get better careers, but it was still very much career vs children and women were still expected to marry, while men were expected to bring home the money. Obviously don't just randomly put it in; make sure it relates to the question and argues your case.

As for critical views, it doesn't have to be from newspapers of whatever. It's easier just to say the different ways things can be read in. So, for example, for you could discuss the feminist interpretation or the Marxist and explain how they affect the readings. Also it's good to talk about how some texts would be views differently in today's society e.g. 'Wuthering Heights' would have been shocking in Bronte's time because of the rejection or religion, wheras now it's considered romantic and passionate. It's ok to use quotes though- in some texts you get an author's preface and it's fine to take a quote from that and use it to support your point.

For ours we have to include one critical reading of each text.

Hope this helped a bit :') Feel free to ask me more questions.

    Thanks!

Yeah my teacher assigned us to do our coursework over the holidays to hand in on the first week of term (first draft). It's on Marxism in relation to Tony Harrison's poem entitled 'National Trust' (which is ah-mazing).
