Re: Is internet access filtered at uni?I think the internet access in your room varies at Universities. But most Uni's that I know of, broadband is included in the room. With regards to filtering, it's not like school, I know at some uni's people go on facebook etc. It might be different at other Uni's though. Hopefully that helps.(Original post by Hear Me Roar)
How does internet access at university work? Do you have to pay extra to be able to get online on your laptop in your room? Is it filtered like the internet on school computers was? Or can you go on anything?

Re: Is internet access filtered at uni?
Depends on the university. Its pretty standard to have wifi in your room these days, either that or ethernet. I don't know anyone at uni who doesn't have internet access in their room though. The filtering is uni specific, however I doubt any university actively filters content like at school - you won't be in the situation where you try and access a site and a block message appears instead. However, your IT department will be able to see all traffic going through the connection, so say you went on some illegal animal filth or something you'd probably get a warning and a nasty letter. The only other thing you can get stung for is usage - if you start downloading 10TB a day then you'll get yourself into a difficult conversation. As said before though, different universities have different rules which you'll be able to look at.
tl;dr you can go on whatever you want, just remember your usage is being monitored and people can see everything you're going on. -
Re: Is internet access filtered at uni?
Paying for internet tends to depend on the university - although the majority I know of, internet is included in the room price.
They don't filter, although a discussion I heard once did debate whether the websites you access are tracked by the uni (i.e. they were trying to decide whether it was okay to access porn), pretty sure no uni actually does that, or at least they don't care unless you're doing something illegal or downloading too much.Last edited by who.the.heck; 05-08-2012 at 17:18. -

Re: Is internet access filtered at uni?
Nope, no Facebook, games, Twitter, MSN, Skype, nothing.
No eating in your room, you have to eat in the kitchen at all times. You also must be in bed by 10:30PM everyday, and if you miss any lectures you will receive a detention without warning.
Seriously, what do you think? -
Re: Is internet access filtered at uni?ha funnily enough in the t&cs for my halls, you technically weren't allowed to drink alcohol in your room or in the hall, it had be in communal areas i.e the kitchen.(Original post by robthefool)

Re: Is internet access filtered at uni?
I'm sure it depends on the university, but I've never heard of anyone getting into any trouble except for bittorent (and not even for the downloading, but because the way bittorent is set up is that it fills a fast internet connection to help others, and therefore can slow down the entire university's connection).
