Clothes for sixth form - help!! :(
I'm going to be in sixth form in September with non uniform every day and really worried what in going to wear

In my whole wardrobe I have clothes for home then clothes foe going out but I don't go out that much so I haven't got that much decent stuff to go out and be seen in.

Where would I start to fill a new wardrobe (on a limited budget)?

Re: Clothes for sixth form - help!! :(
We had to wear black trousers/skirt and a blazer and any shirts so I started in the m&s summer sale and looked online. I managed to buy a blazer from h+m online for about £10 cheaper- they usually have a £5 off code and various others. I bought a few shirts and had a few from work experience so that was enough to start with and just bought more throughout the year. I also bought a few jumpers to wear over shirts and scarves, belts etc. to add variety. I think you can get away with buying fewer clothes and adding accessories.

Don't worry, at first I thought everyone would wear fancy clothes every day (a bit like non uniform day) but I think a few weeks in, nobody really cared what you were wearing which took the pressure off. At the beginning I kind of wished we had a uniform but I realised I could get away with wearing a t shirt in instead of a shirt so it felt more relaxed.

To be honest, it's not as big a deal as everyone thinks. No one really notices if you wear the same outfit often, and as long as there isn't a 'smart' dress code, you can't expect people to look amazing every day. I'd say just buy some staple clothes that can be worn with a variety of different outfits and that go with the clothes you already have. For example, I wear a bodycon skirt a lot because it makes you look smarter/better dressed, even if you combine it with a casual top.

Honestly, don't worry too much. Don't feel like you need to go out and buy a whole new wardobe, just buy the basics and update as you go throughout the year. Try not to shop much until you have your student card as you can save a LOT of money with that! Most high-street stores will give you 10% off, at this time of year there are often promotions as well which will offer you 20%.

Here is a list of real basics which is what I would recommend starting with...

    Tops:
    - vest tops in a range of colours. £2,49 each at New Look, similarly priced at H&M. Burgundy, dark green, black, white, navy, etc.
    - 2 or 3 simple tees. H&M have basic, well cut ones in many colours.
    - a few "nice" tops, for instance long-sleeved blouses, patterned tops, embellished tops, etc. Anything that is in-trend or that you like as your personal style. Things that look nice thrown over skinnies and pumps.
    - cardigans. 1 light, 1 chunky
    - hoody
    - jacket

    Bottoms:
    - black tube skirt. These go with everything if you are really stuck for an outfit. Tights, loose tank tucked in, chunky cardi over the top, messy bun and cute pumps, easy.
    - dark-wash skinnies
    - mid-wash skinnies
    - shorts / patterned skirt (wear with aforementioned vest / tank + cardi)

    Shoes:
    - boots
    - pumps (e.g. New Look £7,99 for a pair of ballet flats which come in 6 or 7 colours)
    - converse / cheap alternative

As you go throughout the year you'll develop your own style better and add in to these basics. Honestly, at the start of the year everyone dresses to impress but by the end the vast majority roll in in trackies and no make-up

Stick to stores like New Look, H&M, etc. They're cheap and have all the basics as well as current trends.

    Edit:
Let's assume you shop for your sixth form clothes in New Look / other similarly-priced high street clothing stores. I work in New Look, so I know their current prices of the items I have mentioned on my lists of basics. I did a really quick, rough calculation taking ALL of those items into account and the total comes to roughly £220. Obviously, you probably already have quite a few of the items I mentioned in your wardrobe (vests, tees, skinnies, shoes), so it's just a case of filling in the blanks, updating a bit and buying some cute accesories to add some colour/personality/detail. So I reckon if you're careful and shop in the sale as much as possible as well as sticking to reasonably priced stores you can get what you need for £150-ish. Which isn't bad at all, considering how long it'll last you

Sixth form isn't a fashion parade- you are there for 2 years to get good grades and to learn. Wear something that is comfortable.

Thanks yeah I've bought about three things at the moment - just don't want to over do it but don't want people to think I'm a weirdo or anything by not having a different set of clothes each week ... First impressions too because I'm at a new sixth form where I dint know anyone! :s x

Awww :') thank you for that reply it was really helpful

Yeah ive done some work experiences too but never thought of wearing that! Good idea

With the accessories that could be my life saver I can wear different tops each day with different accessories each week so I don't look to much of a drab

I wish there was an uniform too! Lower school was so much easier :') wish I appreciated my uniform hee hee

Thank you :') you clearly are a savvy shopping queen that's a really good idea! Do you know where I'll be able to get some long-sleeved t-shirt style tops? Really basic but can't find them anywhere! - same with a black tube skirt (both size 6)

And I hope so, this will be a new start for me and I really don't want people thinking I'm a drag or something! Thank you

I know but I'm not going to be able to learn if I'm panicking all the time because I am the only one looking like an idiot! x

Thinking back to the start of year 12, everybody seemed to make an effort for the first week or so before deciding they couldn't be bothered worrying about their clothes as well as dragging themselves out of bed in the morning.
Forever21 is good for buying cheap, casual clothes.
