Olympics - Indian Subcontinent
Indian Subcontinent - India + Pakistan + Bangladesh + Srilanka + Nepal + Bhutan + Maldives.
1.7 Billion people = 2 Medals in London (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
Something is very wrong. Genetics? Facilities? Attitude? Investments?
May be they are not built for sports? but i don't believe that because they decent in hockey and cricket.
I know the conditions are pathetic and facilities are bad, but if countries like Kenya,Ethiopia Jamaica and other poor African nations can win 4 or 5 medals, why can't South Asians?
May be the only way they can win a gold is by introducing 20-20 cricket into Olympics? -
Re: Olympics - Indian Subcontinent
Its cricket or nothing. Ive met people who moan about the dominance of football in Britain - go to the subcontinent and then talk. I mean if you told the man on the street in India that the national sport was infact hockey, theyd be in disbelief that it hadnt been reassigned to cricket.

Re: Olympics - Indian SubcontinentWhat do you lot mean by the caste system? As in why does it hold them back?(Original post by Tabris)
No infrastructure, caste system holds back any potentially good athletes, no interest in anything other than cricket. -
Re: Olympics - Indian Subcontinent
Government corruption which leads to lack of funding for sports.
Also, I'm not sure about the other countries, but in India you won't survive unless you get a job in an something academic. Usually young people there will strive to be doctors, engineers, physicists, etc. which I think is great.
Not every country places sport at the top, and not every country needs to. -
Re: Olympics - Indian Subcontinent
The people saying caste system aren't entirely correct.
Legally (in India anyway) it was abolished over 50 years ago, however you could argue it is still alive, just not as intensely followed as before. It is mostly practised in rural areas; the more developed places are educated about these issues.
Caste does not (as far as I understand) affect things on a grand scale such as making sportsmen/women.
Badminton is pretty popular in India. They managed to get the first Indian Bronze medallist in Women's singles and the Men's singles guy is pretty good as well. -

Re: Olympics - Indian Subcontinent
Probably the most significant reason is that these countries are quite poor and you don't actually care about sports living in poverty. However, it is still quite surprising they are so far away from other countries in terms of medals, I guess the sport infrastructure and sport education is just catastrophal. If India started to seriously compete in sports, then GB would never come third again I fear.
