What is going on in the USA? (guns)Number of privately owned guns in the USA is estimated at 270,000,000 (small arms survey 2007). I have seen an estimate of 300 million+ by now.
The rate of privately owned firearms has been increasing since around 1992. I dont have year on year stats but it has been increasing. Notable spikes include just before the Brady Bill was passed in 1994, just after 9/11 and when Obama was elected.
Overall Homicide rate (per 100,000 people)
1993 - 9.93
2003 - 5.69
2009 - 4.96
2010 - 4.6
Gun Homicide rate (per 100,000 people)
1993 - 7.07
2003 - 3.3
2009 - 2.98

The rate of gun suicide has decreased during this period (as has overall suicide rate) and so has the rate of unintentional firearm deaths.
Just like most countries the vast majority of gun homicide takes place in inner city areas and involve criminals and gangs. America has a big drug and gang problem. Much bigger than most European countries and this will have an effect on the homicide rate.
The overall homicide rate has been more than halved in less than 20 years. They still have some work to do though and guns are still a problem.
