Good Lord how is one supposed to afford clothes for the Sixth form?
Hello, I need to start shopping for clothes so I can go to sixth form without wearing the same thing every day. I've always worn a school uniform so I've never needed to bother and have like 3 shirts and jeans with a pair of steel capped boots. It never occurred to me that there is no uniform when you are at college and I had not budgeted for such an experience. How much am I going to need for the stuff bearing in mind that one will need footwear and a bag too.
I've always looked dashing for the crowds at my school with my smart blazer and tie, but now I'll have to fork out quite a bit of money. How much is this going to cost me, it only has to last me a month so I can get more money -
By the way, looking 'hip' and 'cool' is a must, I don't see why they couldn't have stuck to the good old uniform.
I do not have any money and I have set some aside for a motorbike to actually get there. Is my budget of £50 - £100 going to be enough?
    Thank you

I managed with £100 and existing clothes. Buy most of your stuff on sale or from cheaper shops

Go shopping at Primark and in Charity shops.

Perhaps you could raise some money by offering to mow lawns, walk dogs, babysit etc...?

Just buy clothes as you go through the year, you dont need to buy all the clothes you will need at once. TBH after the first 2-4 weeks no-one really cares what you are wearing anyway. well at my sixform anyway (just finished my first year)

Try next, primark and h&m for cheap and good clothes

How pathetic. Just get a few more shirts and some trousers. That should sort you out.

You don't need to worry about this just wear the clothes you would have worn after school.

Everyone makes a big deal out of clothes and looking good for the first week, but trust me, after that no one bats an eyelid. I've just finished my first year and I only had about 3 pars of jeans, a couple of pairs of shoes and some vest tops/shirts. If you're that worried, wear the same jeans and mix a few tops around or vise versa. Really, no one notices what you wear! But I'd say £50-£100 would be fine.

Did you wear your uniform after school all day every day? :lolwut: I loved not having to wear uniform, it meant I didn't have to get changed after college. I managed with the clothes I already had and a few new cheap t shirts from Primark.

you'll be surprised how little people care that you've already worn that top once this week. In fact, I'd reckon no one will notice!

You need to have the concept of a 'capsule wardrobe'. You are not buying outfits, you are buying pieces that you can mix and match together.

So, think about what would go in your capsule wardrobe and then how you are going to get it.

I think you would need to have one 'goes with everything' jacket. Maybe like 2 pairs of shoes, one more casual than the other (one pair more casual, not one foot more casual...). Think about what else you wear and how you might be able to recycle clothes with different trousers or shoes to change how it looks.

I think Primark is a good place to start for some cheap and usable clothes. Tescos are actually surprisingly good for cheap fashion clothes now as well.

This thread is stupid,it costs a lot more to buy school uniform than to buy clothes to wear at college because you can just wear the clothes you would have worn on the evening anyway and buying school uniform puts an extra cost on top and OP don't bother trying to wear different clothes each day just wear the same I only usually wear one set of clothes each week.

Re: Good Lord how is one supposed to afford clothes for the Sixth form?
    Just my experience:

First week of sixth form: People wear their most fashionable clothes, wanting to make an effort
Two weeks after: People are still trying to be fashionable and wearing trendy clothes and putting outfits together, but not so much
After this: People wear what they want and realise that sixth form isn't a fashion show and that no-one really cares what anyone else wears. It's pretty much acceptable to wear the same thing more than once a week, people are obviously aware of washing machines.

Now, with the money you have I will say this - don't buy anything that is currently 'in' or what a lot of people are wearing to be fashionable. Fashion moves so quickly and as we're about to go into a colder season you're best spending your money on practical clothes. I was cleaning out my wardrobe yesterday to give some old clothes to charity and I can say now that some of the 'fashionable' stuff I bought 2 years ago when starting sixth form are things I would never wear now. So stick with (just some ideas) jeans, shorts for a rare hot day, a long-lasting thick jacket/coat, some basic t-shirts/jumpers (h&m is good for this but if not then go to primark or a charity shop) to spend your money on. After the first few weeks of sixth form pass and people stop being so keen to impress everyone pretty much everyone dresses in quite basic clothes anyway. The concern becomes more about what's comfiest to wear when you're sat down for hour after hour in study periods or lessons rather than what's fashionable.

Re: Good Lord how is one supposed to afford clothes for the Sixth form?
Well i am coming to sixth form after spending most of my life in the US, where we don't have a uniform and wear whatever we want every day. Luckily, i have acquired a lot of clothes over that time because in the US its looked down upon if you repeat outfits, and i have about 45-55 different tops and like 15 different pairs of jeans. This enabled me to wear at a different outfit every day for at least nine five-day school weeks. I totally understand that i'm a girl and to most UK people this seems completely over the top, but in the US, especially where I live, its necessary. I'd say for a guy have about 3 weeks worth of different outfits (don't have to be fancy or anything), and don't try to buy everything at once. Never in my life have i gone out shopping and bought more than 6 tops at a time...maybe its different for a guy though. I aqquired stuff over time, and you will too! Personally i don't think anyone will may that much attention to what guys wear, it was definitely that way in the US. I really wouldn't worry about it too much. As long as your not wearing the same clothes over and over you'll be ok. I'm guessing you already have a decent amount of clothes, so i'd aim to buy maybe 5-8 shirts? I say shirts because to be honest no one really notices if you wear the same jeans or trousers all week, so that doesn't matter as much. Like I said, you'll acquire clothes over time. If you are really worried about it, maybe buy 2 new shirts every month?

Trust me it really isn't, I just finished college and by the end there were some people who turned up in the pyjamas. The novelty of having to not wear uniform wears off after about a week and people just wear whatever.
