GTP - excited and scared
HI I am new on this site, so if I make mistakes, please bare with me!!
I am beginning my GTP course in September and I am SO looking forward to it, but I am terrified too, I so want to teach its all ive ever wanted to do......but what if I cant get a job at the end of it? I have just spent 18 months in a first school doing full time voluntary work, and have managed to get onto the gtp at the same school. Its all the other stuff Im worried about.
Is there anyone out there who is in the same position or who has recently completed the course? -
Re: GTP - excited and scared
I think we all get those fears with teaching, it's cos we have been told it's going to be hard as a student teacher. But we can do it, just stay calm and stay positive. I'm starting PGCE Primary in Sept and I start in 5 weeks, 5 WEEKS!!!! I'm starting to freak out a bit, really nervous and wondering if I'm going to be able to do it well and manage to cope and stuff. I always knew I wanted to teach too, just nervous and can't believe I start so soon.

I just finished a secondary SCITT (so kind of a happy marriage between a GTP and a uni based PGCE) and loved it. Yes it was hard sometimes (anyone who says it wasn't, there's a 1% chance they are a superhuman or 99% chance that they are lying), but the best year of my life.
It can be tough to get jobs- I didn't get one until June. But OP you are in a good position with regards to any jobs/maternity cover etc that come up in your school- provided you prove yourself to be good for the school you could land yourself a job quite easily. Of course it's not a guarantee but it could happen! You will also have a LOT more experience early on than somebody doing a uni-based PGCE as their placements often start later and they may not be expected to do a lot of teaching before Christmas. So any jobs that come up just after Christmas- jump on them. -
Re: GTP - excited and scared
Just finished my GTP and it was a tough journey however got there in the end!!
Wont go into details about my personal experience etc but in general just be organised and don't put things off until later... You will feel like you're the only one trying to cope but make the most of those uni days (you will go in once a week ,right? ) and just rant and vent to the other course mates because they will know exactly what you mean. lol
Good luck!!! -
Re: GTP - excited and scared
Worry about the "what happens after" bit when the time comes to put in applications. A lot of that will depend on luck, your flexibility with location, and how you develop over the training year as a teacher. Nothing at all that you can do anything about right now!
You'll have a massive head-start that you know the school, the people and the policies. Probably a lot of the kids as well. A huge advantage that most PGCE/GTPs don't get, so you are in an excellent position before you even start. -
Re: GTP - excited and scaredThank you for that, i hadn't thought of how much experience I would have before Christmas, I will definately jump on any chances of jobs at any time. Good luck in your career(Original post by noodles!)

Re: GTP - excited and scared
I'm starting a PGCE at Staffordshire Uni on 10th September. I'm really excited and have done loooads of reading and feel just about as ready as I ever will do. Just excited to get going now. I've been working on my mental arithmetic as I keep failing the practice QTS tests though
I'm trying not to worry about getting a job, I can't be flexible on location due to family which is a pain but I do live in a relatively good area 3 cities within driving distance and quite a few towns. I'm also just trying to think that even if I don't get a teaching job I'll still be SO much more employable so I won't exactly be any worse off!

Re: teaching refelctionDid you not have to do a personal statement? Just be honest.(Original post by Goody1390)
I need to write an essay on why I want to be a teacher, but I don't want all of the usual cliches, has anyone got any ideas please?
I know why I want to be a teacher, but putting it into words that dont sound dull and boring is driving me MAD
.
Please please help

Re: teaching refelctionIs it just an internal course thing? Just be honest. Write about a few of your experiences and how they have made you want to become a teacher. It may well sound clichéd in parts, but if you add the personal touch about your experience they'll know you mean it! (plus you will most likely have to answer that question in job interviews so practise now!)(Original post by Goody1390)
