Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympicsWasn't it obvious I were on about track cycling?(Original post by Connhk)
Which is why two Jamaicans came 1st and 2nd in the 100m and there were two Aussies in the Long Jump final? (along with numerous more Kenyan/American doubles on the podium). Christ almighty. -
Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympicsHonestly, in this thread... no(Original post by Atmos)

Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympics
Personally I'm all for expansion of events, put in squash, all the swimming events (50s and 1500/800 female/male respectively) and add all the cycling races to the competition, hell, I think we should expand track, why isn't there a 4 x 200 and 4 x 800 track race? It's not as if they take a long time, swimming a 200m free race is similar in length to an 800m running time.

Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympicsin almost every olympics there are about 4-8 swimmers who come away with more than 2+ medals, it is certainly one of if not the easiest sport in the olympics to multi-medal in(Original post by Converse Rocker)
There is a clear distinction in technique and training though. Nobody else can swap between strokes like Phelps so it will be interesting to see what happens in Rio where he's not competing. Most swimmers will have about 2 races where they have a realistic chance of winning, or even placing for a medal. It's not an easy thing to do it at all.
We have chance to win all the swimming events that America do, so it's not exactly unfair. -

I find it quite despicable that people want to modify sports that exist in these formats OUTSIDE of the Olympic games just so they can win through illegitimate means.
Newsflash, Swimming has all these events OUTSIDE of the Olympics, the Olympics does not have the ability to cut out bits of the sport, it takes all of it or none of it. (Within reason, I do think they should add the 50 sprints in all four disciplines).
Some peoples suggestions for inventing completely new events that do not exist independently outside of the Olympics are just ridiculous.

Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympics
Why should we invent new events because other teams are winning? Surely it is more in the Olympic spirit to work harder and do better in the sports that already exist. Phelps is an incredible Olympian and I would hate for his achievements to be downplayed because of other countries' jealousy.
And as far as I've noticed, we've won quite a lot of the cycling events, of which there are quite a few. Without cycling and rowing, we wouldn't be in the position we are now. -
Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympics
The yanks are cleaning up in the swimming because the aussies are underperforming in the pool for some reason.
Tbh all this bitching about events is a result of irrelevant league table obsession... The last thing anyone expects to find on tsr I'm sure

Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympics
In the world cycling championships there are 19 track events. In the olympics there are 10. Cycling is, to my knowledge, the only discipline in which you can only have 1 team per event as well. The number of events were reduced AND the new rule about 1 team introduced after Beijing purely because of Britain's dominance. The USA has dominated swimming too (as many golds as everyone else combined so far) is 34 events. No single cyclist could win as many events in cycling as Phelps could win in swimming. For those who think swimming needs all it's events, they are just taking different techniques and then repeating them over different distances. Cycling could easily do the same, just take some events and do them over different lengths.

Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympicsYou're the fastest at that distance. Someone might be faster than you at the 400m, someone else at 800m and then someone at the marathon. I can't see Bolt winning the 400, 800 and marathon. He's the fastest 100/200m runner but at the longer events there are runners faster than him.(Original post by DaveSmith99)
Swimming should be about who can run fastest, running should be about how can run fastest, sailing should be about who can sail fastest etc. If I'm the fastest swimmer at backstroke there are still probably loads of people who can swim faster than me. If im the fastest 100m sprinter there is no one who can run faster than me. -
Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympicsThe doubles is gone? What after this Olympics?(Original post by 1337camper)
i vote for more table tennis events then, now that doubles are gone=less gold for china -
Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympicsYes, but a whatever distance backstroke swimmer isn't even the fastest swimmer over that distance.(Original post by SirMasterKey)

doubles been replaced by team event, its mixed of singles + double play but only have men and womens team events -
Re: Seriously we should lobby for more cycling and rowing events at the olympicsThey are in the backstroke discipline though.(Original post by DaveSmith99)
Yes, but a whatever distance backstroke swimmer isn't even the fastest swimmer over that distance.
Wow those Russian synchronized swimmers, amazing.
