Re: Nick Clegg: Lords reform plans to be abandoned
Lords reform was never about making things fairer as clegg points out. It was one of the few things he thought he could push through within liberal guidelines and yet hes failed. Why? Simply because the people do not care. Their concerns are more about the commons than the lords. Also the lords has only scrutinising power. It can make comments and block bills being passed but does not create them, thats the commons and where the power should belong, and the people know it.
Give up Clegg. You failed students, you failed on AV and now you've failed on this.
The only good thing that man has done was increasing the income tax threshold for the poorest in the country. That i can respect, but its things like this he should have been concentrating on. -
Re: Nick Clegg: Lords reform plans to be abandonedI think this is one of the characteristics of the LD party, they tend to focus on large issues of principle, rather than matters of policy that effect people in their daily lives. I think to an extent that's a luxury of being the third party, they can focus on principles without having to worry about implementing ordinary policies.(Original post by Macabre)

Whilst things like Lords form, constituency boundaries, and even gay marriage are things most of the electorate really do not give a toss about, they are still things that are important for progress as a nation.
It's interesting that in America the reverse is true. While the election battle should in these times be a matter of who can best restore the economy, it seems to have degenerated into matters regarding the candidates tax arrangements, abortion law, and sexual preference. Again, this is stuff people really should not be interested in, yet they are somehow derrailed from focusing on important policies.
I really am glad that mostly in our country we do not expect candidates to be candid about how much money they have or their views on matters of morality. Maybe a part of that is British reservedness; it's not appropriate for our financial information to be available in public, and we do not expect to be challenged on moral issues.
