Can I be in two universities at once?
So I completed a year a X university however I also entered the 2012 UCAS cycle in June as I wanted to switch courses and therefore had to switch unis also.
I currently have an offer from Y university which I have firmed and I have already enrolled online.
I Contacted X university last week about dropping out and they replied today stating that I can take a year out can come back next year as opposed to permanently dropping out.
Am I able to take up X university's offer of the year out and study at Y university for the year?
It would be a back up choice if I failed/didn't like etc Y university. -
Re: Can I be in two universities at once?
One of my old flatmates was a Law fresher at one uni while doing third year english somewhere else (in another country, even). I wouldn't use that as a role-model though to be honest, she basically drank all night, slept all morning, did about an hour of work in the afternoon and spent the rest of the time driving between the two places and eating chicken...
Taking a year out wouldn't really be like dual-degreeing, but in all honesty, I'm not sure how your first uni would think of you going somewhere else in that time. -
Re: Can I be in two universities at once?
The funding situation for this would be very complicated - if you're getting a student loan to live off and a tuition fee loan then you're only allowed 1 per year and to keep swapping universities/courses could well end up using up all of your available loans without completing a degree.
You'd have to let university X know what you're doing in case the SLC or someone convince them to expire your place because you've gone elsewhere.
I'd suggest speaking to student finance england (or equivalent if you're scottish/welsh/NI/EU) ASAP to find out if this will blow their minds

Re: Can I be in two universities at once?It is student finance, of course it will blow their minds. There is absolutely no way in hell SF will be able to give me any accurate advice on such a complicated situation, so I will not trouble their minds with such a burden.(Original post by PQ)

I am getting this year's fees covered by Y university so if I did return to X uni, I would only miss out on the grant for the second year. Also there is that Irish passport/Scottish uni loop-hole so I may not have to worry about tuition that year.
Anyway, at this point SF is a 'cross that bridge when I get there' situation. All I want to know if what I am doing is 'allowed'. I will not be doing a dual-degree, I will be temporarily putting one on hold to start another. I simply need to know if this is possible without me getting completely screwed over e.g. kicked out of both X and Y. Obviously I would be letting both unis know of the situation. -
Re: Can I be in two universities at once?If they both know and are happy about it then it shouldn't be a problem - most places wont hold you on dormant for longer than a year though (maybe 2) so if it looks like things aren't going to plan at Y then let X know ASAP that you'll be coming back(Original post by bestofyou)

I'm now thinking you should constantly ring SF about this to just see how confused you could get them
Good luck - if nothing else you'll have a very interesting CV

Re: Can I be in two universities at once? Thanks, I'll contact my universities tomorrow and let them know and see what they say.(Original post by PQ)

Its a long summer, so maybe when I get bored I can ring them up for the fun of it, maybe even throw in University of Z just send them overboard. My my what I wouldn't give to see the student finance offices erupting into chaos.Last edited by bestofyou; 06-08-2012 at 17:41. -
Re: Can I be in two universities at once?
Lol that first comment made me laugh. Eating chicken and driving between classes seems really fun =D I know your situation is not about wanting to duel degree but never thought about it tbh. Would they let me? like could I go and do one of those degrees where you are only in uni a few hours a week and scrape through it.... oh crap... funding... o well I cant be bothered deleting be as well posting this now. =/

Re: Can I be in two universities at once? The universities can allow anything they want, and if they say yes it is fine. But it will screw up student finance, you won't get any funding for Y while you are registered on a course with X at all, for the purpose of finance you will have to leave X.(Original post by bestofyou)
anyone else?
If you do go straight back to X after a year you will still have two years left so will have funding still even after being reassessed (using the system they use), but you will have lost your extra year. -

Re: Can I be in two universities at once? And now I kept remembering when applying to unis that they always telling me: "You cannot be registered at 2 universities at the same time".

Re: Can I be in two universities at once?Being at one university doesn't stop you applying to another so UCAS doesn't really come into this. There's no particular rule against being enrolled at two universities at the same time provided both know and agree to it, but as PQ has said, student finance will be the tricky part.(Original post by 4RealBlud)
You can try?
But in all seriousness, i agree with one of the above posters. It would complicate your student loan and grants. I'd contact UCAS and ask THEM rather than on TSR.
