Sixteen year olds looking for a job.
I've seen a lot of threads about sixteen year olds looking for a job, so thought I'd just make a general thread. I reckon the majority of us have very limited experience seen as we are only just old enough to be legally employed and are still in education, etc. Has anyone actually gotten a job yet? One which they've applied for, if so, where? How long has everyone been applying for, and where and how are you applying?

I can't really understand what you're saying, but if you mean how can you get paid when you're fourteen, then I don't think you legally can. You have to be of school leaving age, which I think is the last Friday in June of the year you leave school, to get a job which pays hourly and into your bank account. But, at fourteen you could get a paper round or work at a family/family friend's company and get cash in hand, heard loads of people doing that, but I'm not sure, sorry.

I seriously thought it was just me. I've applied for at least four/five a week, which is a lot considering how little part time jobs there are.

I guess we've just got to keep trying and hope for the best. I know this girl who applied for one job and got it straight away, and another who'd only applied for three and got one as well - so frustrating.

Don't set your aims too high. To be honest, any job you can find that pays at minimum wage is very decent for no/little work experience. Just keep trying.

It's not what you know, it's who you know. Go out, get some volunteering work done, make connections. Meet more people = Greater opportunities of paid work, plus it enhances your CV.

When I was 16 I got the first job I applied for.

Though, to be fair, it was McDonalds.

I've done some volunteering and enquired about doing some more, but some places even have waiting lists for volunteer work now. -.-

I'm applying for mainly retail, but applied for some restaurant and catering assistants, can't really think of anything else. You? :-)

It's pretty brutal. I recently applied online for a job at Sports Direct, hopefully they'll email back soon. I say hopefully, but there's probably a higher likelihood of seeing a flying pig in the sky tomorrow morning.

I've just come out of working in a major supermarket, there were so many 16/17 year olds working there. I'm sure they'd rather pay a 16/17 year old £4 something an hour to shelf-stack than they'd have to pay national minimum wage for to a normal adult...

Most places will snap your hand off at volunteer work. Independent cafés, charity shops, your local library...

I was 14 when I got my first job, I still work there. When I started I got paid £4.50, once I had been working a year it went up to £5 and when I turned 16 I now get £5.50 loads of my friends when they turned 16 applied in places like tesco and sainsburys

Re: Sixteen year olds looking for a job.
Problem is, that there are a lot of jobless people right now. So, unlike in previous years, they will likely compete with 16 year olds for the same job.

Why would employers choose someone with no experience, looking for their first job - over someone who has already been in the workplace, with experience?
So, it's difficult to find jobs for us lot.
