    Computer suddenly slow
Built my computer last year and never had any problems with it, used to run very fast and smoothly. All but the most graphic intensive games I could get high fps.

Now I've had people staying at my house and for various reasons my computer hasn't been switched on for about 2 1/2 months. Now, it runs fine one minute, then grinds right down the next. If I have too many windows open, or more than a couple of tabs open in chrome, and it becomes very sluggish. I'm also only getting about 5fps on games when I used to get 60ish on high settings.

    Any ideas?

Someone's been touching your computer from the looks of it.

Open up your computer and make sure every components slotted in place properly, all the wires are properly connected, clear out the dust.
Restart it, than run CC cleaner to get rid of unwanted files like history and also registry issues.

After that make sure everything is up to date, graphics card driver, the motherboard bios, etc.

    Virus scan it fully.

Download defraggler to clean up your hard disks. Download CCleaner and clean up the PC (clean out useless files. uninstall junk and toolbard and then wipe the registry).

Check for software updates. Patches and drivers ect.

Perhaps re install windows and notice if a fresh install help out performance.

If not monitor the temperature of the parts. perhaps dust might have got in if you have mesh or open vents on your case.

Depnding who these people are/weather you trust them, but I'd probably just re-install Windows.

    Thanks for the responses!

I don't think they would have touched it, they are getting on a bit

I've not got a clue where my Vista (I know :banghead: ) disks are so I'm going to have to dig them out or something.

Will give it a good clean out as well dust wise.

Is this a persistent issue? Would it be a whole bunch of windows updates installing and dropping your CPU usage?

Is defraggler significantly better than the Windows defrag?

It's telling me my hard drives are 20% and 59% fragmented, whereas windows told me all was well AFTER I just defragged it?!

There was a fair few downloading but they are done now. The computer seems faster but games are still dragging at around 9fps.

Have you looked in the task manager to see if any processes are taking up large amounts of memory or cpu time?

That seems a lot, but I still use xp do it may just be vista. With processes Google is your friend.

I assume you've run ccleaner, installed all the updates that java and adobe keep bugging you about and so on. Try using malwarebytes anti malware to do a full scan (then uninstall it, no use having it sit there).
