Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012He could have won every race this year and be in with a slim chance at SPOTY given what Wiggins, Ennis etc have done! It will almost certainly be an olympic winner I think.(Original post by PGtips)
I think it will be Wiggins, there's also sportspeople outside of the Olympics, who might have a shot at it. Such as Lewis Hamilton, if he wins the formula 1 championship.
It's too hard to pick, I think BBC will have a headache just thinking about it. -
Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012
Think Hamilton is a long shot, considering how the media has covered Wiggins' victory. Alonso looks sure to win the title anyway.
I'd go for Wiggins, we always knew that he could win the TdF but I don't think it was expected until the latter stages. Hamilton has also won the F1 championship recently and we haven't had a TdF winner for a long time (possibly ever? I don't follow cycling that closely).
The other Olympians will be close, e.g. Ennis was the poster girl and she did great with the expectation on her shoulders and Farah did brilliantly to win the 10k but Wiggins won the TdF as well as gold so it's more than just the Olympics - similar to how Murray could be in with a chance if he won Wimbledon/wins a slam before the year's finished. -
Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012In sporting terms, 2008 is not recent. And no, we've never had a British winner of the Tour before.(Original post by jordltfc)

Cycling 5 hours a day for 3 weeks with 2 days rest in the third biggest sporting event in the world is easy? -
Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012By viewers, yes.(Original post by manchesterunited15)

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012In total, average or at the peak?(Original post by Drewski)
By viewers, yes. -
Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012Total, of actual spectators present. You get a million people in Paris for the last day.(Original post by manchesterunited15)
In total, or at the peak? -
Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012i'm pretty sure it doesn't get a million watching it, and if it does it's only because it's free...(Original post by Drewski)

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012You've been, have you?(Original post by manchesterunited15)
i'm pretty sure it doesn't get a million watching it, and if it does it's only because it's free...
There were 500,000 on the Champs Elysees this year. If it had been a Frenchman who was about to win, that would easily be doubled. Add to that the countless thousands who line almost every mile of the 3000km route. -
Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012
Ainslie's just become the most dominant person ever in his sport, which is probably the biggest achievement of all the above. They're all the best Britain has ever had, but Ainslie being the best the world has ever seen should put him ahead. However, sailing isn't that accessible to most people, so it'd probably go to someone in a more 'visible' sport, probably Ennis. I'm surprised by Wiggins being so far ahead in the poll though, maybe he'll win if TSR is indicative of general public opinion.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012Like I said, it's free. If you made it free to watch the olympics, or world cup, or euros, or superbowl, or wimbledon, you'd get a hell of a lot more than 1 million accepting your offer.(Original post by Drewski)

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012Except you can't because you can only fit so many people in a stadium.(Original post by manchesterunited15)

Doesn't mean it's any less interesting or people are any less a fan of it just because they can go for free. The Tour is one of the most watched sportig events, globally. End of story. -
Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012This. And he will win by the way.(Original post by TheInvincibles14)
Mo Farah if he wins the 5000m, if not then Wiggins.
