Re: Medics - How do you remember it allYou don't. You just know enough to remember that oh this looks like something I saw before.(Original post by Khat)
I'm just wondering how do you medics revise so that you can effectively retain so much information and then apply it. -
Re: Medics - How do you remember it all
Flash card software (Anki, mnemosyne, etc) is gold imo - you can sync it with your phone and do them on the move, etc. Also the occasional mnemonic, repetition, drawing stuff on whiteboards, asking people questions, getting them to ask you questions.. some people like condensing lectures onto A3 sheets spending hours making one nice neat sheet - for me, that's a waste of time.
There's not as much as you'd think to remember though e.g. in anatomy, you don't need to learn every muscle.. and on my course at least you can get away with learning a lot of it by muscle compartment. Things that are important to remember would be side effects of drugs, but even then, if you know the main ones that's probably enough - and they're not that hard to remember if you focus on understanding the mechanism.
On top of that, some things that seem daunting at first (e.g. cranial nerves) get repeated so much that they'll eventually stick without much active effort to learn them. -
Re: Medics - How do you remember it allSo pretty much the same as how you'd revise for anything really I guess and I will definitely try the flashcard software instead of manually making them now so thanks for that.. oh ok what university are you at ?(Original post by Dr. Cool)

Re: Medics - How do you remember it allWhat we are supposed to do is learn in a continuous and progressive way through each year. We are supposed to avoid cramming information and learn effectively and efficiently over long term periods to aid retention and application of the knowledge we gain.(Original post by Khat)

What actually happens is we learn small amounts of information throughout the year, **** ourselves just before exams and spend three weeks learning what we should already know, before each exam.Last edited by carcinoma; 07-08-2012 at 20:52. -
Re: Medics - How do you remember it allPlease don't tell me things like this. I'd like to believe there's one sensible profession.(Original post by carcinoma)

Re: Medics - How do you remember it allWe have A LOT of exams, dont worry. There are enough exams, that you end up only spending a few weeks each year doing the bare minimum.(Original post by Norton1)

Re: Medics - How do you remember it all
You aren't consciously aware that you know half the things you do - until you see a patient with something you recognise, or an exam question that stirs it up in your memory. A lot of it ends up being intuitive memory rather than the explicit kind you can repeat to yourself.

Spoiler:ShowEDIT: as with every job, the real learning comes with experience. Med school is just about underpinning that with some basic science and core principlesLast edited by nexttime; 08-08-2012 at 06:18. -
