tbh you cant get the education system anymore messed then it currently is. The government first say that universities need to recruit a wider range of students. But for that to happen they can't just fix the grade boundaries or else students will be at a disadvantage, then they wont get into uni.

Re: Fury as examiners are told to fix A-level results to match last year's
It would be better to just alter the content of the A levels to match their over glorified A levels circa 1980's.
Or they could just tell exam boards like Edexcel to make their papers like for A level maths harder like the OCR ones. Because hey, it's not our fault that we have a wide selection of textbooks to choose from these days, having been improved and devised by professors for the last few decades through trial and improvement. And it's not our fault that this along with help and videos on the internet has made education more accessible to more people. I admit there are people that probably have a quicker or better capacity than me at maths, and I probably would be a lot worse at it if I were studying 25 years ago. But that would be because I would have confusing or hard to grasp material to work with, not hardcore exam papers. -
Re: Fury as examiners are told to fix A-level results to match last year'sI think the point is that you may not care, but the universities (and employers to a lower extent I guess) do care. Hence why they had to bring in the A* in the first place - far too many people are being awarded A's.(Original post by pellejema)
Yea i'm sure you'd be saying this if you had to get into uni this september with an A*. I frankly don't care how many people get an A*, as long as I'm among them.
Though of course, "fixing" results now isn't very fair as you'd be compared to others who haven't had their results fixed - it should really be done as part of a new qualification.Last edited by callum9999; 07-08-2012 at 02:01. -
Re: Fury as examiners are told to fix A-level results to match last year's
Something i have noticed. The government has never praised students for achieving great results. They never seem to realise that there are students out there that work hard to get their grades, yet you have people who moan about grade inflation year on year. If they really want to restrict the number of A's, then why not just introduce a new curriculum that meets their criteria. its about time they actually realised the hard work and effort students put in over the 2 years!!!

Re: Fury as examiners are told to fix A-level results to match last year'sThey praise them every year... In fact every year they refute that exams are getting harder, and claim that the students are getting better... The governments aren't the ones moaning about grade inflation (otherwise why would they let there be grade inflation?).(Original post by umair.khan)

Re: Fury as examiners are told to fix A-level results to match last year'sNot what I voted for, but I have no major qualms with it. It's neither appalling nor isgusting in my view - just not particularly good. And as for the people saying they "can't mess up the education system any more badly" - don't be so utterly ridiculous. Unless you are claiming that you are all super-intelligent and have managed to get GCSEs/A-levels in-spite of the education system, not because of it?(Original post by onda)
For those who voted for the conservatives...is this what you voted for?
Appaling and disgusting.
Why do they have to be more lenient? Though I can see why it would annoy you, and sympathise with that, universities choose people based on exam results. Why should they be lenient and let people in when there are people with higher results they can give the place to? If there isn't anyone with higher results then they can be lenient - as usual. (Though if you think you're borderline A, you shouldn't take notice of this anyway - for all you know you could have gone a couple of marks over the grade boundary and this won't knock you down a grade).(Original post by sshah210)
****ed up my chances of getting In Uni I was just scraping an a if anythin. I think unis will have to be more lenient now for this year

Re: Fury as examiners are told to fix A-level results to match last year's... The whole controversy over norm-referencing is that some people might deserve a higher grade and yet not be awarded it. Can you really not see how that's wrong? If too many people are achieving As, then yes, maybe changes are needed. But going back to this system which we know doesn't work - tried, tested already - seems ridiculous. There have been so many changes either introduced or planned for education, it's unfair as it's just messing students around.(Original post by Miryo)
How is that wrong? You need to restrict the number of people getting the best grades to make them worth something. If 80% of people got A's, universities wouldn't even use A-levels as a requirement, thats why they're bringing in admissions tests etc, A-levels don't distinguish between candidates.
This section of the article sums up peoples' concerns nicely:-
"... if as a consequence of tougher rules on grade boundaries, pupils are denied the opportunity to gain the highest grade of which they are capable and which they would have got in another year, then they will be unfairly disadvantaged. In these tough economic circumstances, that will hit pupils' future chances hard".
