I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions!
Hi!
So I would quite like to get myself a tablet for my next year of uni but not sure which one to get! I mostly want it for games, movies, tv, browsing etc... so it's mainly an entertainment thing, but it would be useful if I could do a bit of work on the go (powerpoints and the like).
I've had a look into the ones around but could do with a couple of first hand opinions as to what the models are really like. I was thinking of the transformer prime 300 but am probably likely to only use the keyboard occasionally, and also the acer A510 seems just as good but I've heard the picture isn't as good. I've heard the asus and acer can run special games on the tegra zone as well, which is quite appealing. At this price range though I'm half wondering whether the Ipad is just the most sensible route... In terms of cheaper ones, I quite like the look of the samsung galaxy tab, but can it really perform as well?
I was also wondering what kind of lifespan I can expect from the different tabs before they become technologically obsolete? I would like it to last a few years... Should I wait for the mass of tabs that are going to be released later this year, or take advantage of it to get a previous model cheap?
Comments much appreciated! -
Re: I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions!
If you're going to be doing a lot of gaming and video watching the New iPad really is the best option, the calibre of tablet dedicated games is just a class above on iOS and the display is just phenomenal. Android have well and truly caught up in terms of smartphones, but Apple still rule the tablet market for very good reason.

Re: I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions! Thanks for the advice! I can see how the ipad is the best tab out there at the moment, but I'm a complete apple virgin! I had a try of one in the store and it was good, had some great apps on it, but I still have a slight fondness for android. I'm unsure which way to lean, try something new or something familiar? I bet this makes me sound old! I want this tab to last a while so really want it to feel like the right choice, I must admit though I want power and Ipad is that power, but can android ever be so?(Original post by Gofre)

EDIT: I just looked up the Ipad and it appears to have no usb ports, but I was kind of hoping for one, is an adapter available?Last edited by Rhonut; 09-08-2012 at 21:15. Reason: Additon! -
Re: I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions!I've seen this and looks good! However I've also heard rumours that the price tag will be huge, I don't really want to spend more than a couple hundred pounds! I think it's more aimed at business-y people than those who want some entertainment every now and again... I suppose I have yet to see price though, maybe it'll be surprising! Maybe I missed it and it's already published somewhere on the net!(Original post by DenmansDinner)
The best tablet to meet your needs will be the Microsoft Surface in my opinion, comes out October 26th. -
Re: I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions!
I would always encourage someone to get a good laptop over a tablet. My tablet gets very little use. A large screen smartphone does pretty much everything the tablet does and is much more convenient (convenient factor > tablet screen size). Tablets can't decide what they are good at atm and do nothing particularly well-- they just look cool.

Re: I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions! The Nexus 7 is a hell of a tablet. It's only £159 for the 8gb (£199 for 16gb) and you get £20 free to spend in the Android Market. It's also sporting a Quad-Core Tegra 3 so gaming shouldn't be a problem and it does have a HD screen for movies and whatnot. In my opinion this is the go-to tablet in terms of overall value for money. You get SO much for the price you're paying.(Original post by Rhonut)

I agree the nexus 7 looks fantastic, especially the price tag! I'm just not sure if I would choose that small a screen size.(Original post by Maxima)

You get SO much for the price you're paying. It does appear to have quite a lot and seems very good value but as I'm interested in watching films and tv the screen size is a bit small. I am thinking of just going towards the cheaper ones now, maybe the galaxy tab r something. I want to maybe be able to see how much I'd use it and what for without paying loads, then pay more and upgrade further down the line as they develop and become more powerful...(Original post by myblueheaven339)

I went to look at tablets in the flesh and none of them came even close to the iPad in my opinion! I decided to go for the 16gb new iPad and I'm loving it so far. I have a nice laptop too so I'm mostly going to be using it for browsing while I'll save my laptop for word processing etc.. Really chuffed

I haven't had the chance to see anything other than the samsung galaxy and ipad in the flesh yet, but hoping to take a look at asus, acer and some mid range ones when I get back to the UK... (That Ipad display was awesome though!)

Re: I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions!
I got the iPad for university and I think it'll be really useful - it's a brilliant device and I am totally in love with it particularly the screen! I got it at a decent price for ~£350 from http://www.pay-monthly-ipad.co.uk/ who compare the cheapest ipad payg deals so I am very happy. IF you need any specific info, then please feel free to pm me

Re: I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions! What kind of allowance do you get and how much do you pay monthly for it? I don't fancy being tied to a contract after a disappointing two years stuck with T mobile...(Original post by schoolrun)

Re: I want a tablet! Need advice and opinions!the prices are really good, and you can choose the allowance you want - they compare the cheapest iPad 3 deals. With 3G, most networks are really good and you shouldnt have any problems - if you do, then they would give you a fulll refund, its like a 3G coverage promsie(Original post by Rhonut)
