    Optometry without science a levels?
Hello. I study AS levels in Maths, Psychology, Sociology, English Combined. Predicted AAAB respectively. [thinking to drop either sociology/english]

I'm aware Manchester offer a foundation year to go onto optom for those people who don't have the correct a levels. What i would like to ask is, are there any other ways in which i could do optometry? I have done a lot of research and every uni requires two science a levels. has anyone got onto the course without them?

If i don't get a place on the foundation year at Manchester then i'm thinking to take the gap year and do biology. Then re-apply with Maths, Psychology, Biology. That's my plan B anyways.

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated, thankyou

Contact the universities and ask what your options are. They might be willing to consider you with your A levels if you do another foundation year. Or maybe even offer to study http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergr...ourse/y178.htm alongside your A levels (if you think you can fit it in) which might reassure them that you've got the scientific knowledge needed for the course.

Also ask them whether maths and psych count as sciences in their book - what a university/course will count as a science A level varies between every course and in some cases your choices might be enough.

Another option would be to attempt Biology AS alongside your A2s....again contact the unis that you're interested in and ask if that would be enough.

Maths will almost certainly count as a science (everywhere I applied to counted it, and it's generally regarded as such anyway), plus it's really useful to have for the course.
Whether or not psychology will be is down to individual unis, although I seem to recall most of them saying 'two sciences from maths, bio, chem, physics'.

That said, if your statement is good and predicted grades high enough they may still give you an offer anyway.

Your best bet is to email or phone the universities you're interested in and ask them about it. The worst that'll happen is they'll say they wouldn't make an offer.

Thankyou very much :-) i've emailed all the universities im interested in. And if all else fails, i'll just have to start again and do science a levels, or hope manchester take me on with their foundation year!

I'm just curious, is there a particular reason you want to go to Manchester, or is it just that you want their foundation course if it doesn't work out?
Because I thought I wanted to go there until I visited. The area wasn't exactly the nicest. :/

Yeah, its only just because its the only course that accepts my A levels and after the foundation year allows for me to progress to Optometry. Plus it's close to my home town which i like, i don't want to move too far :')
