    This is just disgusting:

Corrupted officials are using religious retards as key witnesses now and the country is jailing people for breaking some long-forgotten church decrees...

This is USSR all over again...

How bizarre. To think that the Orthodoxy is being used in this way when just a little over 20 years ago its followers were openly harassed and mocked, and a little further back, even killed. Of course, the Russian Orthodox Church has never retreated from helping the State achieve its aims. It worked alongside Stalin to increase Russian patriotism when the country came under threat from Nazi invaders. History is cyclical, and this is a pretty sad example of that.

    A) It's the Guardian.
    B) It's an article wrote by the husband of one of the defendants.
    C) No mention of the charges or the actual evidence being presented which makes me think that the author is not exactly giving us the full story.

I've been following this in the papers recently and it is ridiculous, Russia is sliding into authoritarianism under Putin. I read that they've been tortured, denied food and water for lengthy periods and facing upto 7 years in prison?!

Unrelated but they have a great name and one of them is hot.

I don't think anyone really believes this is about the church do they? The band is somewhat (to put it lightly) anti-Putin (as most people probably should be), and this trial is a great way to lock them up where they can't protest against Putin anymore, without making it look as bad as "Putin has a sissy-schoolgirl fit over a band that doesn't like him and jails them". The Church, and the blasphemy laws being used to charge them, are simply tools here.

They're being charged with hooliganism and blasphemy, and could face up to 7 years in prison if the court finds them guilty - which it will. From what I could gather, they burst into a church in Moscow and sang some anti-Putin song with religious overtones that offended a lot of people. Its hardly the crime of the century, and both Amnesty International and the SPP recognize the band as political prisoners.

    I don't see the problem?

Putin is what stands between Russia and Goldman Sachs. We've seen what these people have done to Greece and Spain. We've seen the massed immigration they've spearheaded in England to try and destroy our ethnocultural group.

Putin is a hero and stands as a wall against the masses of filthy fiat money printing neo-liberals and their imported African chattel.

If this "pussy riot" undermines the protector of Russia, they deserve to be treated harshly.

Goldman Sachs are behind mass immigration too, now? With all the other stuff they've been doing, I'm not surprised they didn't do a good job as a bank...

If anyone seriously threatened the power of the elite of any 'liberal' country they would be in some way destroyed so there's very little between us and them.

Not crime of the century but bursting into a privately owned building presumably while an event was going on with the sole intention of causing disruption is hooliganism. 7 years sounds harsh, so does 4 years for posting a face book message. They are clearly using this case to send a message and to act as a deterrent, we do the exact same thing.

As much as i disagree with blasphemy being illegal that doesn't mean Russia is a totalitarian government and if a band burst into a mosque or synagogue in the UK and sang an anti-Muhammad or an anti-whatever character Jews get pissy about song they would probably receive a prison sentence. The author is making a lot of bold claims with nothing to back them up which is not surprising considering his wife could be imprisoned for 7 years (don't mean that in a nasty way i do genuinely feel bad for him especially considering their young daughter) however his emotional distress is not evidence that the Judge is out to get them or that the security services are monitoring his calls.

I don't recall reading that the girls ever threatened to kill anybody, like the people arrested for being a prick on twitter did.
