Re: I know nothing!I know exactly how you feel!!! I'm glad I'm not alone! I have no general knowledge whatsoever!(Original post by GildedButterfly)
I am 20 and I really dont know how i got this far with knowing so little about politics and society. Its coming to the time know where the gaps in my knowledge are being exposed, and I really want to learn as much as I can about politics and society in general as quickly as I can. If someone could give me ways of teaching myself about politics-whats the difference between lib dems/conservatives/labour, why did people dislike thatcher....i feel overwhelmed by how stupid i feel. Could someone please help?

Re: I know nothing!1) Learn about the great ideologies: Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Nationalism. You can do this by googling or if you have the time reading introductory books on political ideologies. By understanding this, you'll have some knowledge about how people think out their political views and what political figures and comentators stand for.(Original post by GildedButterfly)

2) Learn about figures: you've got to know who are the movers and shakers in todays world. Start with the three party leaders, Cameron, Miliband, Clegg. On the international scene: Obama, Merkel, Hollande. Then move on to previous prime-ministers: Brown, Blair, Major, Thatcher all the way back to atleast Attlee and Churchill.
3) It is very important that you learn about institutions. Learning about how institutions like Parliament, the Cabinet, The EU, and the United Nations work will help you to understand how laws and policies are made and how power is used and distributed between these key institutions.
4) This is the most basic but the most important, you must follow the news as closely as possible. Use a variety of sources and learn about the sources themselves and how they present information in their particular ways. Watch BBC news, read the Times, The Guardian, the Telegraph, the Independent etc. If you do this you'll understand why the people who make the news do the things they do and more importantly, this will help you discover your political views aswell. I hope you find this very helpful

Re: I know nothing!is there any way to read it subscribe cheaply(Original post by g_star_raw_1989)
What is the difference between the lib dems/conservatives and labour? Not much.
If you want to keep on top of current affairs the best thing to do is read a decent newspaper or something like the The Economist. -
Re: I know nothing!
I suggest you start watching the news every night. This will help you keep up-to-date with current affairs etc.
You seem to have a long list but that is not a bad thing as they are all related. What to do is write up your list and spend maybe 15-20 mins googling one thing from the list each few days. Read articles and just find out the brief facts- you need not go too far in depth. Just have fun

Is your name Jon Snow?

She's been hanging around The Wall for too long paha.
OP Google what you don't know, read books
If you're really interested in Thatcher then pick an autobiography up. (Or a biography, whatever floats your boat).

Re: I know nothing!Says the idiot rightist With no actual contribution to the thread.(Original post by dj1015)
What ever you do.....Do not turn in to leftist, they are weak and can't be trusted!.
"don't be a righty because they care for self gain and can't be trusted" would actually be more justified (even though I think that untrue, because believe it or not, I don't judge people based on their politick opinions.).
There are rightists who can't be trusted (Mitt Romney) and weak ones (Ed Miliband). There are also weak and untrustworthy leftists. But don't generalise. -
Re: I know nothing!I'm much more moderate actually. But thanx for confirming what I said originally.(Original post by AspiringGenius)

Re: I know nothing!study a bit of economics, don't allow other peoples opinions to change your opinion, not everyone hates thatcher, many in today's youth are uneducated about certain points. Then categorise your self into your personal beliefs and where they best match and which party suits you, for example someone who is for free markets with mild regulation, elitist ( views that some people contribute more to society and are thus more valued) would place themselves on the right of the spectrum while free markets would initially put you into the libertarian side of things, if however you like control, then Authoritarian would suit you better. If you believe everyone should be paid the same whatever they do with a government which controls everything you can look at communism, it;s all down to personal beliefs, however our current system is slightly flawed in the UK and there isn't much in the way of a true left or right wing party that is viable to vote for, it's simply who's policies you think would benefit yourself or the greater community.(Original post by GildedButterfly)
