Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?
Hi, I was just wondering if Uni's look at Adv. Highers before normal Highers.
I just found out I got an A for Physics (chuffed
) and I'm worried that if I take advanced Physics and get, say a B/C, they'd look at that rather than my A.

Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?
It would depend on the conditions of your offer. If they asked for a B in AH Physics and you only get a C then they would look at. If your conditions said AB in any subjects and you get AB in another two subjects but only D in physics then they wouldn't look at it. Hope that makes sense

Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?
Sorry, I just realised how stupid my question was.
I was kinda asking, say if Uni's required an A but then I got an Advanced C...
But even then, I still have Physics at Higher A so it would still qualify.
Again, sorry for the stupid question but thanks for replying

Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?Um, it depends on the uni really and the admissions tutor. Some will think that if you got a C at AH that it's the equivalent to a B at Higher but then realise you already have an A so look at the A. It doesn't really matter. If you're applying whilst taking the advanced higher like most people do then you won't know what grade you have for AH...(Original post by RandomLetters)

Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration? It just depends on the uni, the admission tutor, the course, etc. In what way for conditionals, you can be given a conditional at any grade on your AH.(Original post by RandomLetters)
Would you say that uni's generally look at the better grade then? I was just wondering for conditionals. -
Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?
Forget about my last post, I was talking nonsense.
Really, I was just wondering if the requirement for a course was higher A (which was achieved by candidate) but say got Adv. higher C of same subject, would that make the candidate look 'bad' or would they still have the exact same chances of getting into the course?
For example, the candidate got an A for Physics in 5th year, but for the course they want, they have to take a new subject in 6th year but alongside takes Advanced higher Physics but gets a C, would that affect the chances of getting in the course? Assuming that the course requires the new subject AND physics.
Sorry if I'm making things really complicated. -
Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?
I assume if you need the new subject and already have an A on your old subject, your conditional would then be based on the new subject, because you'd already have the condition for the other subject? Idk if that makes sense either, but say for example you needed Physics at A, Chemistry at A, and you'd already got your physics A. If you took AH Phys & Higher Chem, they'd tell you you had to get an A in Higher Chem cos you already had it in Phys? Idk though...

Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?
OK.. I think I kinda understand how it works.
I was just worried that having an A in higher physics would be disregarded if you get like a C in advanced higher physics or something because I heard that some people take an AH C to be a Higher B but I guess if the requirement is Physics at Higher A then it shouldn't matter what the candidate got for the advanced higher. -
Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?Yeah, the universities aren't going to cancel out the Higher A for a lower AH grade. They are also less likely to focus on said subject if you already have the minimum entry grade requirement at Higher.(Original post by RandomLetters)

Re: Do Uni's take Adv. Higher before normal Highers into consideration?
When I went to the open day at Edinburgh last year they said that as I already had an A at higher Chemistry they would just disregard the fact I was doing AH. But as they required an A for maths and I had a B they would then ask me to get a B in AH Maths as they regard that as equivalent to an A.
On the other hand Strathclyde said that they would want me to get a C at AH Chemistry even though I had a A at Higher.
So I guess it depends on the uni and maybe even the subject.
