    Say 5 years from now.
The ones that require a skill that isn't easily replaceable, just as it always has been.

Aha, some great responses. Where do you think optometry is going? Up or down?
People are living longer therefore need glasses for longer, so I would say up!

Re: What jobs are likely to be in demand in the future?
The will always be work in health and social care i.e. social care workers, social workers, support workers, nurses, physio, etc, etc, etc. Even more so in the future thanks to the aging population. I personally think that anyone embarking on a career in healthcare is a smart person making a smart move, as so long as you don't commit any crimes, make stupid detrimental mistakes and enjoy your work, you pretty much have a job/career for life, even if it will never make you rich. If you lose a job, there is always another one to go to. Even though the government/councils are always changing/cutting budgets to social care, the deficiencies are often picked up by the third sector. It's not THE, but one of the reasons I'm chose to change to social care. #Witnessed from MANY MANY people.

There's generally always a demand for tradespeople i.e. plumbers, electricians, mechanics, cleaners, even though some of these areas are becoming increasingly difficult to earn a good living from due to competition for migrants who charge less, i.e. check out gumtree for example. The average basic maintenance gardener in my area on there charges between £8 and £14 phr, but unregistered 'self-employed' people who are most likely on benefits who want extra cash in hand or migrants are charging things like £5-7phr, which is below min wage! You know for a fact they aren't genuine businesses as a business can't afford to run charging that little due to red tape, taxes, insurances etc.
Generally speaking though, there is usually work regardless.

Also personal services such as beauty, nails, pet grooming! Sounds quite funny, but no matter how broke people are, they still always manage to find the money to make themselves look and feel good, and people love their pets as much or even more than themselves!

Definitely down. When I went to the ophthalmology department at the hospital the other week they had this machine where you sit down and follow a hot air balloon on the screen and this then gives you information on your eye. Like a prescription.
