Veterinary medicine 2014 entries, work experience and personal statements.
Okie dokie... So I know that there are loads of threads on WE and PS but I figured that our year should have one. So a bit about me, I've wanted to be a vet as long as I can remember - not too cliche right?? - and I'm hopefully taking maths, English literature, biology and chemistry for A level... And I'm doing an EPQ.

I guess what I wanted this thread to be about is people giving each other advice on how to get work experience and what people are putting in there personal statements... That way the majority will be different so we won't be putting the same as others... Also I wanted to know what people thought about Edinburgh university and Cambridge because they're my top two choices but I'm not sure if they're right for me at the moment - anyone else considering them???

Also, anyone wanting to ask me questions are welcome... I think it would help me out a lot too hahaha x

I hope you all get in to the places you want x

What is it you wanted to know? I have an offer from them and if I get the right grades I'll be off to Edinburgh in September so I suppose I could answer a few questions about the whole process of applying to Edinburgh?

I personally didn't apply to Cambridge because I didn't like the fact that it had so few practical elements in the course.

i applied to cambridge but didn't get an offer so could probably answer questions on how not to do a cambridge interview!

like dizzeedollee, it wasn't really my favourite due to the lack of practical elements but i'd be happy to answer questions about applying, unless someone better qualified comes along!

Well Edinburgh is my favourite choice ATM but I didn't know if it was the right one for me because I didn't know if it was a more practical based learning or lecture based... x

What was the basis of the Cambridge interview?? Because I know that Nottingham sometimes use animals in their I view but I have no idea for any of the other universities x

I'm just curious to know why you picked those three uni's over the other uk choices?? So what were the pros and cons of those choices you made because I have a general idea about which ones I want to apply to but I still haven't made a firm choice yet x

i assume it depends somewhat on which college you apply to but i had two interviews, a general one and a science one. obviously i can't tell you anything too specific but the general one was, funnily enough, quite general and covered general vetty topics, work experience, ethics, why i wanted to be a vet and why i'd applied to cambridge - things you might expect in a vet interview. the science one was very specific science questions. they weren't particularly difficult (A-level biology and chemistry) but i made a complete hash of it so they might have got harder if i hadn't got all the easy ones wrong!

Ahaa I'm sure you did better than you think lol. I think I ask way too many questions on tsm but that's because I over think and over plan then I go on to over plan my over thinking hahaha. I guess that's. My OCD side lol... I still don't know if I'm Cambridge material and even if I am hat college I would apply to haha x

I would say the course currently is a good mix of both; it's not as practical orientated as Nottingham is but it's certainly not as theory only orientated as Cambridge.

If you're not sure, my number one piece of advice is always, if you can, go to an open day. Not only can you ask the students and staff everything you want to but you can also have a look at the facilities, get a feel for the place, look around the city and see whether you can imagine yourself studying there. I never wanted to apply to Edinburgh but then I went on an open day there, loved the feel of the place and couldn't imagine studying anywhere else, so thank goodness I got an offer :P

Well the scousers rejected me

Whilst I saw many flaws against applying to Cambridge: Very far away from home, such a theory based course, didn't particualrily like Cambridge itself.. (it was alright, just a bit underwhelming tbh!) And to me the vet school itself looked a bit tired; it seemed to me that there wasn't the recent investment in it, whilst other vet schools were ploughing money in; see Notts, Bristol, RVC Hawkshead etc.

Pro's of Bristol: Near home, lots of investment, very nice area.

Cons: Lost some of it's reputation in recent years.. it'll take time to regain it fully, I had a Nottingham offer

Pro's of RVC: Recognized by just about every veterinary association, interesting course structure (spiral strucure.. the wonderful schizopear can tell you more about that ) Hawkeshead :coma:

Cons: I couldn't live in Camden.... I'm too much of a country boy , also one of my interviewers - shouted at me for not being observant enough... it didn't really appeal me much to the Uni

I can't say anything about the Scottish uni's or Dublin, as I haven't gone around them... far too far from home for me... literally 12hrs traveling at the very least. However, I have/had 2 family members at Glasgow vet school, they absolutely loved it

Pro's of Notts: New course - revolutionary, new buildings, a desire to improve, basically breath taking!!!!!!!

Cons: None that I can see

Tbh, whatever vet school you go to, you shall be a terrific vet

Now I'm off to worry about results :cry2:

    Hi!

I am interested in applying to Nottingham for the 6 year course as I dont have the 2 required science subjects.

I live on a farm and have lots of work experience with vets.

Can you give me some tips when completing the personal statements or any guidelines.

    Tks a mill!!

My tip is to always link back to how your work experience/ hobbies/ life experience improves you as an applicant for veterinary. Also.. make sure you mention LA w/e.... uni's seem to love it!!!

For the Nottingham questionnaire, same applies, link your answer to veterinary where possible!

I am currently starting my A2 year at college but I am not applying for university this year as I am going to be taking a gap year to allow me to massively broaden my work experience pallet. I will then apply for entry in 2014 after I have my results which (if all goes to plan, and i work ******** hard) according to my predictions should be A*AA!
Good luck to all of you guys in your AS year and get piling on the WE with me!
