Re: private housing with uni matesYou still need to pay rent, the landlord might choose to give you half rent over the summer if you are not there but they don't have to and that will be the only time.(Original post by sonal_var)

Re: private housing with uni mates
does the bills have anything to do with the landlord if the bills are not included and have to sort them out ourselfs because im just payin my rent no bills but have fallen out with flat mates over it but im not using any water electricty lighting even plan to use a torch if i need anything from my room lol x

Re: private housing with uni matesYes you need to organise your own utilities (gas, electric, water). While no one is there you can call to say it is empty and you won't get charged for the electricity and gas for that period as long as everything is off (maybe a very minor one charge).(Original post by sonal_var)

The water is a bit different, you pay a yearly rate that has nothing to do with how much you use so you will need to organise payments for that. You could ask your landlord for help in organising them as he will know all the companies (if they are a nice landlord at least), or your uni will be able to help you with all this. And you definitely need to talk to your flatmates to get it all sorted. -
Re: private housing with uni mates
ok if im willing to just pay water bills as thats a fixed charge do i still need to pay electricty etc if im not going to be living in the house my flatmates seem to think i have to pay it and its in the tenancy agreement however its not as the bills have nothing to do with the landlord x

Re: private housing with uni matesThere shouldn't be any charge while nobody is there.(Original post by sonal_var)

While you are technically responsible (all housemates not just you) for the electricity bill from the start of the tenancy agreement, if you ring them and tell them the move in date of when the first person will arrive (even an estimate) and then inform them as soon as that happens with a meter reading so they know when to start charging from, you will not actually pay anything for the period it is empty.
So yes you are responsible for the electricity while not there yet, but you will not actually pay anything if you do it right. -
Re: private housing with uni mates
arh im confused im not going to be living in the property at all just my belongings will be there in my room do i still need to contribute to electricty bills and othr bills throughout the year if not living there just my belongings in my room which i am going to pay rent for x

Re: private housing with uni mates
You still have to pay your rent which you seem to know. Since the water bill is fixed it seems fair that you should pay your share of that as well. so you are asking about Gas electricity and internet(?) because you wont be using them?. There is no rule about whether you "have" to pay it is down to you and your housemates to sort out. I can understand why they want you to, if you don't they will be paying more, but I don't think you should give in and agree if you are literally going to be living somewhere else and using nothing.

Re: private housing with uni mates
even though they will be paying more it has nothing to do with me its them that are using the internt and electricity and will be using it alot seen as if i did stay there i would never be home x thats why im staying at bf and paying my rent however as the water bills fixed thats all i am willing to pay x My flat mate is bascially bringing all her clothes tothe house and washing them all here and im not paying for her 2 use all that electirty must be mad also tv licence onli 1 person is going to have tv in there room no1 else is so im not going to pay that x ALso is the electricity bill fixed because the rest of flat mates can split it between them selves has nothing to do with me it would be there fault for using so much electricity etc im a uni student i dnt have money to waste on bills also bills arnt included and were all girls so its likely to be realy high im not forking out for bills thats why im living with bf and just about afford rent on my room and am willing to pay water bills thats it x

Re: private housing with uni matesI think misunderstood you, I thought you were asking about before you all move in.(Original post by sonal_var)

You are not in any way legally liable for the cost of electricity, gas, internet/phone you are not there to use, especially if you are not going to be there at all. But I can see why your flat mates would be annoyed, because they could be living with someone to split the bill with.
But this is dependant on whether your name is on the bill, do not agree to do that obviously.Last edited by mabrookes; 07-08-2012 at 23:50. -

Re: private housing with uni matesWhy on earth are you renting a room that you are not actually living in, seemingly so that you can store you stuff there? Surely self storage would be much cheaper?
There is likely to be a standing charge for gas and electricity, on top of the metered usage. Water is usually not metered but calculated based on the size of the property. Internet will also be a fixed price rather than metered (obviously).
Personally I think you should be chipping in for everything except for the metered usage. -
