Can I just upgrade the harddrive in my laptop?
Hi guys, I have the Toshiba Satellite C650-154 http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.c...UCT_ID=1088829

I was wondering is it possible to upgrade the harddrive in this laptop? I really have no knowledge whether it's viable, or even physically possible to upgrade the harddrive? It's currently 320GB but I was looking for a 1TB+ harddrive really. Is this possible? Is there a certain one I need to buy? Would I need to upgrade other hardware like ram (currently 4GB) or would it not be possible due to my processor? I don't know too much about this so any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

Of course it is, Laptops in most cases are upgradable to a certain aspect apart from certain ultrabooks and the likes.

You would need a 2.5" sata hard drive, believe the access for the hard drive is on the left side.
Should be a few screws holding down a outlined bit around that area at the back.

But you should be aware that the new hard drive will be completely empty and would require a OS installment and than updates on the drivers.

Just get an external one, slightly more but you don't need to reinstall anything of you only have one hdd space as a lot do. If you do have spaces though, you can just slot a 2.5inch hdd in as a second drive and that would be cheaper, you'll need to check.

Thanks for your response and the link provided

Is there a particular brand your would recommend above others, or should I just go with the cheapest that suits my needs? Also I don't know much about RPM, but my current is 5200RPM. Is it best to stick to around that speed so things don't overheat which I think could be a problem?

Thanks for the suggestion although I really hate having external harddrives, as dumb as it sounds I like having it all in my laptop

Not sure about which brands for 2.5" but generally in the larger ones people look at Samsung though others aren't bad.
You should have a look around the internet for a better price.
    RPM should be fine.

Just make sure you find your hard drive slot first.

The high platter density of a 2.5" 1TB drive might offset the low RPM to an extent, although I'm not completely sure. Obviously a 7200 RPM drive would perform better, but it's not going to make a huge difference anyway - nothing like moving from an HDD to an SSD.

And there might be some symbols on the back covers of your laptop representing access to each of the components, so check that.

what on earth have you filled your laptop up with to get near 320GB? i assume films, tv-shows etc?

my personal preference would be to put all your video files onto a network drive, then they're accessible from any computer and potentially your tv, bluray player, consoles, etc.
