How Hard Is Higher Chem?
Hello everyone! I hope you all achieved the best you possibly could in your results today! :-) Mine were only SGs and Int 2's but I'm still pretty pleased with them. So originally I was going to be taking (all higher) Maths, Eng, Bio, Art & French but after getting a 1 in chemistry I'm starting to consider dropping art.
How hard is higher chemistry?
I need 5 A's ... how achievable is an A?
What study books/websites do you recommend?
Thank you!

Re: How Hard Is Higher Chem?It may. I just don't want to limit my options ... Having two sciences at Higher will be pretty useful no matter which career route I go down. Have you sat the exam?(Original post by Norton1)
What do you want to do at university. Will chemistry help?

Re: How Hard Is Higher Chem?I didn't even do chemistry at standard grade, so my S2 chemistry might not be exaaaactly what you're looking for. I'm not sure if it might hold some historical interest?(Original post by carmen_)

My impression from talking to people was that chemistry was a pretty difficult subject, but obviously if you're enthused by it and good mathematically there's no reason it should be harder than anything else.
Two sciences at higher useful for a career. Well, it depends what you mean by that. If you mean it will help you get into the course you want at university then by all means. If you mean a recruiter will look at it five years after you do it and think 'THIS is the person we need at chemicorp!' when your degree is in the history of art. Not so much. -
Re: How Hard Is Higher Chem?Well done! That's really great!(Original post by Umer786)
For some reason I found higher chemistry harder got a C. Then decided to do advanced higher and somehow managed to get a B. weird huh.
Can you recommend any books or websites for Higher?

What do you want to do at University? You need 5A's? I can only think of Medicine on that front in which case most definitely drop Art for Chemistry. Since Chemistry is required. If you don't wanna do Medicine, why'd you need 5 A's?
Chemistry is hard. Out of the Highers I done, It had the biggest jump. You will need to work hard. Quite hard. But it's easily achievable with effort.
I recommend the Bright Red Book, the Success Guide and the HSN website. -
Re: How Hard Is Higher Chem?Well there is the how to pass higher chemistry, very effective for formula and equation question and PPA's. Also these new books which have come made by the new publishers(red something can't exactly remember my minds abit rusty lol, two years since I sat higher at 5th year)(Original post by carmen_)
Well done! That's really great!

Most important of all past papers and more past papers. The more you do the better. I can guarantee you an 'A' pass of you do all past papers from 1999-2012. -
Re: How Hard Is Higher Chem?
a good website was higher still notes http://www.hsn.uk.net/ but it seems to have been suspended, although if you get the notes from there they are supposedly very good

Re: How Hard Is Higher Chem?
I got an A in Chem Higher and am now moving on to Advanced. Higher Chemistry isn't easy, it's one of my best subjects but also one of the hardest for me, for H. Chemistry you really need to think about some aspects before you understand them, and you really need to understand them if you're going to feel comfortable in the exam. But that also makes it strangely rewarding as you feel you have learned and not just memorised

I'd say take it if its more relevant than Art for what you want to do, you need to study for it, but you need to study for everything. It's not impossible and is a valued Higher to have. -

I just got 5As, Chemistry included.
Past papers are key. You will soon begin to find patterns in the questions, and after a while, you should notice that the knowledge is basically the same each year, just wrapped up in different packaging.
One thing that really helped me was realising that the questions aren't as scary as they look. A lot of them are just common sense and you need to take a step backwards and think "What are they actually asking me?"
As I found will all of my subjects at Higher, you don't need to know anywhere near all of the knowledge in the course. There are some things that seem to be examined and some that aren't.
So, my advice is to listen in class, read through your notes (I used bright red and how to pass) and try every past paper (I even bought ones from the 90's and very early 2000's.)
If you practice the questions of the past you will be more than prepared for those of the future. I even noticed a few identical ones recycled in my final exam!!
Best of luck,
Rory.Last edited by GremlinFace; 08-08-2012 at 11:45. -
Re: How Hard Is Higher Chem?
Everyone here has given realy good advice which you should take one board. I crashed Higher Chemistry and got a C. I found it possibly the most hardest subject, seeing I crashed this subject. But like Scott006 said, once you get it, that's it. Chemistry can be stressfull but enjoyable at times. But only choose a subject that will help you get into the course you want to do at uni. I made a stupid mistake by crashing chemistry instead of picking it at SG. So have a think of what you really want to do at uni first before you decide anything else.
