Re: How to improve in sprinting
male or female?
either way being thin doesn't help with sprinting. rewatch the 100m, they're all pretty big. sprinting is all about laying down a hell of a lot of power in a short period of time, so working on your legs is essential.
if you don't want to enter the gym, then tuck jumps and jumping lunges will be useful to build strength.
things like high skips, long skips etc will help improve your flexibility and improve your stride length.
other than that do interval sprint training.Last edited by didgeridoo12uk; 08-08-2012 at 10:51. -
Re: How to improve in sprinting
Chicken Nuggets. Its bolt's secret. But really heres a couple of thing's you have to run relaxed, if your running to hard and being to forceful your forcing yourself to slow down, you need to relax and let the speed come to you in the race. Hands should never clench or else the tightness spreads round the body, think of it as a crisp you cant break. Arms should be moving to maximize stride potential if your lazy with it you will be limiting your speed potential. This is a rather obvious one but a lot of people make the mistake, your right arm should never cross the midline of your body as the same with your left arm, it burns energy and makes you run slower.
You want to improve your flexibility for stride length but dont push it too far that you hurt yourself trying to get a massive stride length. Finally, i need to say some people do run with closed fists others run open fist its up to you, i run open fist because i find it easier to concentrate being relaxed and loose. -
Re: How to improve in sprintingRubbish suggestion.
Okaay thanks, but what are high skips, long skips and tuck jumps?(Original post by didgeridoo12uk)

Performance enhancers.
Will do
No idea, havent been training planning on starting. I think i can probs do 100m in 15 maybe 14 seconds? Not much of a sprinter...(Original post by NB_ide)
Why don't you tell us what your current sprinting ability is, how and for how long you've been training, and what improvement you've seen so far. -
Re: How to improve in sprintingInteresting suggestions! So smaller but faster strides makes you slower? What do you mean by midline of body?(Original post by johnharris19944)

Re: How to improve in sprintingBy midline of body i mean the arms should never go past the middle bit of your torso keep the left arm to the left side of the torso and the right arm the right side, they should never cross over to the opposite side.(Original post by Theafricanlegend)

Re: How to improve in sprinting
I'm in the same position as you
, Trying to improve my speed for American football, one thing i heard was to run hills. lots n lots of hills. when you sprint up a hill you automatically (touchwood this is right) go into good sprinting form. also look up some sprinting drills awn da net

Re: How to improve in sprintingtuck jumps: crouch down, explode of the ground, bring knees upto chest.(Original post by Theafricanlegend)
Okaay thanks, but what are high skips, long skips and tuck jumps?
Spoiler:Show
high skips: skip bringing your knees as high up as possible
Spoiler:Show
long skips: skip taking the longest strides you possibly can
no nice gif... -

Anyone who has never done any [exercise] can make huge initial gains by just occasionally [exercising], for example three sessions per week doing whatever the **** they want. Just go and do some running, anything at all. -
Re: How to improve in sprintingWhats bull? The thread?(Original post by NB_ide)

AAnd no, if i have a goal in my training, i.e running 12 seconds then i am much more likely to improve. -

Re: How to improve in sprintingsounds like you a built for long-distance but I'll tell you a few things anyway...(Original post by Theafricanlegend)
hello!
I want to improve in sprinting: So any advice, tips, exercises?
I am naturally quite thin i'm 175cm so (5ft8.9), and around 58 kg if its any help.
Thankss!
once upon a time I used to play football (my knee is no longer capable of such a fine sport) and I used to do quite a lot of training to improve my acceleration and speed during the off season.
I did three types of training, all of which was power related. It is power that makes to accelerate and run fast after all.
Weight Training: basic exercises in a range of 3-5x3-5, however 5x5 is probably better for yourself (start light and work up gradually). Power is a mix of speed and strengh, therefore when it comes to weights power training is very similar to strengh training. The stronger your muscles are the fast you will run. However to recruit the fast twitch muscle fibers more effectively the exercise is best performed in an explosive action, though I wouldn't recommend that for the deadlift.
Squat, Deadlift, Overhead Press, Bench Press, Bent-Over rows and power cleans
Plyometric training: probably the best power training around. A mixture of jumps and bounds in explosive movements.
Single leg bounds, tuck jumps, box jumps etc. Go onto brianmac and search for it, great website.
Sprint Training: One great was to improve sprint time is to actually run.
I never needed to run 100m in a match so why bother in training? I never ran more that 60 but most did short bursts staying in the 10-40 range. The 40yard dash was my main goal. I would maybe so 3x10m, 3x20, 3x30, 3x40 taking 1min between each sprint and 2-3mins between each set. The key to power training is a good recovery.
On top of this you really need to have a great diet and good sleep each night.
You may also want to look into resistance training in the form of resistance shoots for sprinting or weighted sleds, though I have heard these can damage your running technique, idk though
