Is this normal for guys?
So I went to see some athletics at the Olympic stadium last night and I had a really good time. Something happened though that really upset/confused me an I want to know what you guys think about it being acceptable or not.
There was a group of guys behind me I would say about 40 all in suits and really well turned out an things. I think there were about 6 of them. I wasn't listening to them to begin with my then I head what they were saying and I couldn't stop. There were talking about some of the female athletes in what I would feel to be an unacceptable way. They kept calling them sluts and whores and commenting on their clothes. Comparing their looks and bodies and talking about which slut was the filthiest in bed and things. They marked them all out of 10 and picked the one which they most wanted to do.
They also commented really "normally" on the male athletes, talked about records, training, form and things.
I am female and it really shocked me. People have been sexist to me before but never so overtly sexually sexiest.
Males/Females
1. Do you talk like this with your friends?
2. Do you think this is ok / normal? -
Re: Is this normal for guys?
Yeah me and my mates have a laugh when we're out about who we would bang. As long as you're keeping it between you and not harming anyone I don't see the problem
Don't really see why I'm getting negged, bitches can't handle it

Re: Is this normal for guys?
1. No. A slight comment here and there but seriously, I find it really disgusting to talk about it at a level which they were. It's degrading to women, they were being really immature and laddish.
2. I think it is abnormal for their age group, it happens sometimes in the teenage demographic though naturally. -
Re: Is this normal for guys?
Nothing wrong with commenting on someones appearance or saying they're hot as long as they can't hear...
But referring to someone as a "slut" or a "whore" is vile.
That's not normal and if it is normal then it shouldn't be, those are human beings they were talking about. -
Re: Is this normal for guys?Commenting on appearances? Yes of course women do this.(Original post by jamboogy)
Oh come on, it's not like women don't do this. Jesus.
But calling someone the equivalent of a slut or a whore?
No, no woman I know has ever done or would do that, simply because they are too often on the receiving end of this kind of language and know how horrible it feels. -
Re: Is this normal for guys? You really think a guy would enjoy being called "butters" or "ugly" behind his back? You could argue that it's equally as hurtful as a girl being called a slut or a whore behind her back.(Original post by Historophilia)

Of course the term "slut" is only used in a derogatory sense, just like how "ugly" is completely derogatory to a male as well.
Don't try and justify the fact that all women are innocent, cos they're not, they're just not. -
Re: Is this normal for guys? This, not as in thinking that they're are only sex objects but who wouldn't want to bang an attractive women. Although calling them sluts/whores is obviously OTT(Original post by Nick1sHere)

Re: Is this normal for guys?Calling a woman a slut/whore is not equally as hurtful as being called ugly. girls may call some men "butters" but boys call girls "butters" and "slut/whore".(Original post by jamboogy)
You really think a guy would enjoy being called "butters" or "ugly" behind his back? You could argue that it's equally as hurtful as a girl being called a slut or a whore behind her back.

It is normal OP. I used to work with a group of 10- 15 boys. This is all they would talk about. The girls would come in and flirt with them innocently thinking that these guys were so nice. These were guys from all walks of life and people who I would otherwise think are very friendly, funny and typically nice guys. There wer eguys ranging from 19-23 mostly but a few older freshies and they didnt hold back either. Every girl who would walk in would be rated and discussed sexually. They would act so nice to their face and degrade her and call her all kinds of things when she'd leave. They would discuss very explicitly what they would do to them and judge every physical aspect of her body. Like I said, these were guys who I would typically think are just normal, friendly, confident and funny guys but they were actually very bitchy and generally very offensive.
Girls are not innocent but I don't think I've heard a girl ever say anything that even compares or comes close to what I've heard guys say.Last edited by ilovefashion90; 08-08-2012 at 15:31. -
Re: Is this normal for guys? While "ugly" etc. are hurtful terms they can't really be called a direct equivalent of "slut" or "whore". In fact there isn't an equivalent for men.(Original post by jamboogy)

The reason why those terms are so hurtful is because they contain a presumption about someones lifestyle and personality as well. They imply that you are cheap, are worthless, that you can be bought or sold. They imply that you are dirty, tainted in some way.
They are also dehumanizing in a way that saying someone is "ugly" is not because they reduce you to an object. They don't know anything about these women but they are suggesting things about what they are like as people, this is more than just a comment on appearance in the way "ugly" or "butters" is, which is a purely physical judgement.
And when these terms are being used as part of an expression of sexual desire, as they often are, they are particularly disturbing. Because it says something about how men who use it see women they find sexually attractive.
Calling someone "ugly" is also unacceptable behavior, but it does not carry the same undertones that "whore" does. This is partly because "ugly" is a gender neutral term, but "slut" or "whore" is not. They are only used against women, often women who are physically attractive, but also against women who do not behave in a away that some men consider to be right.
As I said, I'm not saying that women do not make hurtful or crass comments about men's appearance but there is no direct equivalent for calling someone "whore". There just isn't anything in the English language that says the same thing about men. -

Re: Is this normal for guys?
I know girls who've been doing more or less the same... comparing the sizes of men's 'packages' insulting the not so well endowed etc.
On the whole it wouldn't bother me, it's not like they're saying it to a woman, or even where the women involved are likely to hear, just a private conversation between friends. I think it's a bit silly to get offended by a conversation that doesn't involve you and that you're just eavesdropping in on.
