Advice Required: Six Highers/Higher Biology?
For my upcoming fifth year at school, I have opted to study six Highers (Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics and Physics). I was previously contemplating on whether or not this was a good idea but I have decided to carry on with my decision and reflect upon it after I receive my prelim results.
As a lot of you have experience with Highers, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on whether the easiest option would be to take Higher Biology or Higher Human Biology? Which would you describe as the easiest/most straight-forward?
I'm 'assuming' I will be studying independently for the entire year so I was wondering if anyone could confirm whether or not the Higher Biology/Human Biology course contains any form of practical assessment at all? Also, is Biology a subject in which I can merry memorise information or does it require problem solving like Maths and Physics?
I'd appreciate it if anyone could share any experience they have of sitting six Highers or someone they know who sat six. How did you get on in terms of results? How did you find the workload?
Just to let you know, I created a similar thread to this a while ago so I 'am' aware of some Universities considering AAAAA better than AAAAAB.
I appreciate any advice you can offer as I'm not 100% sure whether to go ahead with my decision. -
Re: Advice Required: Six Highers/Higher Biology? For self study the one you find most interesting. Since you want to do Medicine I'd do Human Biology (You can still do AH Biology with it.) The courses have alot of overlap so its no real problem. Biology is a lot more about recalling information, but there is a problem solving element to it. Its not hard though. You'll be easily capable of it, its not like Maths or Physics. It's basically extracting data from information.(Original post by nerd434)

6 Highers will be tough. You'll be able to do it though. Make sure you cement some form of help for Biology, be it a teacher or some TSR members, Some concepts may need explained for you.
Personally Biology is an extremely easy subject at Higher. Due to the vast memorisation. You'll do fine
and I'll recommend doing it, just on the chance of an Unconditional.

Re: Advice Required: Six Highers/Higher Biology?
If you're dedicated then 6 highers will be no problem. Quite a few people did that in my school. The workload was okay and nothing too strenuous and since you seem very determined and intelligent then I'm sure it'll pose no problem. From what I can remember most people who took 6 highers got all As. (I was one of the few that got all band 1s as well.)
In terms of biology, most of it is rote learning and then memory. There are some problem solving elements but it's pretty much straightforward. I don't think it matters too much whether it's Human Biology/Biology; our school slightly made out that HB was a tad easier but I have no idea to be honest. I also quite like the animal plant stuff.
I say go for it. As you said if it isn't working out from your prelim results then you can drop it if you want. -
