Can I have a career in Biology without A-level Chemistry?
I think i got average GCSE's (results day is in 2 weeks.)
For a-levels i'm taking:
Biology
Psychology
Business
Economics
I really would like a career in Biology as i love science, but i am not very good at Physics or Chemistry, probably because i dont enjoy them as much. But can i have a career in biology without A-level chemistry?
btw my dream job was to be a hospital doctor, but since i know you have to take a-level chemistry that dream went dead. -
I think in general it would be almost impossible to go from college to uni to do biology without chemistry.
As you get further into biology it begins to merge further into chemistry.
If i were you I'd at least give chemistry a chance, you may really enjoy the a level syllabus/have a better teacher.
My friend was in a similar situation but ended up taking a level chemistry in the end.
Maybe you could just take AS Chem then drop it? May be good enough? Best to talk to a teacher/careers advisor as they will know best but I'm pretty sure this is the case in general
Good luck with results -
I don't think you need chemistry. If you're thinking of a career in Biology I assume you're considering a Biological sciences degree? I studied Genetics at university which shares much of the content with a Biology degree. Although I did study Chemistry at A level it was not a requirement to study a School of Biology degree. As not everyone has taken the same A levels usually everyone takes the same modules in the first year to get everyone up to speed. Any Chemistry you do need to know will be covered in the first year.

I picked chemistry eventhough i didnt enjoy it nd was not so good at it, as i wanted to do something related to biology. I found that i did the worst in chemistry compared to my other a level subjects and dropped it after as levels.
I also ended up applying for psychology to study at university, and am waiting for results day.
Therefore, id say only pick chemistry if you feel you can work hard and get the grades you need. And i also found that you need chemistry for a lot of biology related courses and so do the research before you pick your AS subjects.

Re: Can I have a career in Biology without A-level Chemistry? My science teacher who graduated in Chemistry always kept on banging on about how she didn't take A-level Biology was able to teach us what we needed, although I'm not sure if it works the other way around.(Original post by Hollyemmam)

Re: Can I have a career in Biology without A-level Chemistry?
Im off to do a Degree in Cell biology in October which is very specialised and involves large amounts of biochemistry. I have no A or even AS levels in chemistry. (Although the diploma I did had 2 whole units on Biochemistry alone) I do know that there are a few other courses in my area that do require a minimum of an AS level in chemistry in addition to biology. Essentially the only reason im not studying Biochemistry with Genetics instead.
Good Luck for the future.
