But it's something the Americans started doing when China became good. US still get more medals, so they use the last column to distinguish things because they want to be on top.

There's no official rankings. Of course they will show a medals table but either way nothing is official. And I see some merit in total medals, but see my recent thread.

There is no official way of doing it but personally I feel getting 1 gold is superior to 10 bronze. I don't see how many people could really defend putting a country with 10 bronze above one with 9 golds.

Number of Golds is the only way to do it. If the countries are level on Golds then it goes to number of medals in total.

It should be done by number of golds. If they're tied, the number of silver then bronze. The type of medal is worth more than the number of them imo.

Yeah, otherwise you could have a country with 10 bronze medals above a country with 9 golds, which would be a ridiculous way of doing things.
