I wouldnt count those such as team dressage as a pure team sport like football.Last edited by Drewski; 09-08-2012 at 20:51. -

Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports?Equestrian isn't really a sport, it's an event. Hence why it's called "The Olympic Games" and not "The Olympic Sports"(Original post by Drewski)

Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports?Cycling and rowing are two of our best sports and are both (largely) team sports.(Original post by GodAtum)

Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports? The event in which we won gold in is a Team version. You individually can only succeed if the other members of your team also succeed. If you're so blind as to believe a team sport is only such if you pass a ball between you and your mates then I feel sorry for you.(Original post by Miracle Day)

Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports?Harsh, and silly comment.(Original post by Drewski)
Only because your knowledge of the sport - and maky others - is pathetically lacking.
Dressage and some of those others are obviously distinct from football etc. because the team doesn't actually work together - winning is more a matter of combining individuals' performances mathematically. -
Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports? So they're less of a team because of the way it's scored? I don't believe that. It's a team event, they will only win if everyone performs well and the team helps with that.(Original post by OBAG09L)

Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports? That's exactly what I was thinking. Working together in a group game. Only team rowing is more like football as they have to work together.(Original post by OBAG09L)

Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports? It seems OP is referring exclusively to sports, Equestrian isn't a sport. Look up numerous pages about it and you'll find none of them will say it's a sport.(Original post by Drewski)

Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports? He's getting at that it does not rely on the interplay and cooperation of team members, simply on team members performing. It is a valid distinction.(Original post by Drewski)

If a cyclist is weak on the team pursuit, for example, another cyclist may find themself having to do a longer turn at the front. As you can see, the performance of each member of the team affects the other members. There is an interplay of relative strengths. The performance of the team members on the equestrian front however, is entirely individual, even if it is scored as a group.Last edited by RyanT; 09-08-2012 at 21:00. -

Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports? It requires large core and leg strength, you don't just sit on the horse and let it make its own way round.(Original post by Miracle Day)
Ahh I don't know, by definition sports have to involve physical exertion and I don't think Equestrian does.. except for perhaps the horse -
Re: Team GB rubbish at team sports? No one's saying they're less of a team. Although it is essential all team members pull their weight in the dressage, the dependability of thorough teamwork is not as essential as it is in football.(Original post by Drewski)

You can get a good individual score in the dressage without the support of your team; however, in football you're not going to score if your team aren't behind you and physically helping you in the sport.
I think the OP is referring to sports that involve direct physical interaction - e.g. passing a ball to another team member. -
