    The Better Subject - {Business MGT or Computing and Information Systems}
    In your opinion -

What is the better subject, Business Management or Computing and Information Systems.

Perhaps they both sound like doss subjects, however, in your opinion the best one please.

    Thanks.

    Rather,
    This university or this....

    http://www.open.ac.uk/

    or this....

    http://www.peterborough.ac.uk/ucp/

Considering they are the same fee's and Open is distance and the other one is attendance.

    Thanks.

Im doing business management in september and feel insulted by you suggesting that it is a doss. If you think that they are both doss subjects then I would suggest you do neither

    Hi Steve,
I do not particularly think it is a doss, in fact I enjoy it and have learned a lot from it, but people perceive it as a doss and think it is a useless subject.

I just want to be an entrepreneur and gain Business Skills in the future and be rich.

I think Business MGT would help me with my aspirations much more than Computing and IS.

If you look at other forums a lot of people think that business management is a worthwhile degree. Sorry for the attack lol just passionate about the subject. Managers earn a lot and there are articles that suggest that business degrees are good and knowledgeable people in business are needed.

I admire your ambition and business management would be a great degree for you to gain experience in running your own business. But also it can lead into finance, HR management, marketing, advertising, general management, operations management, business law, production management lol etc so many opportunities so I wish you the best of luck in your career and please feel free to ask me anything relating to this degree

Btw it doesn't matter what uni for business as long as you have a business degree, knowledge and a hell load of work experience because that matters the most

OMG, thank you Steve, I want to hug you, I have been looking for reassurance like that for a long time.

I studied at The University of Sheffield before, but after your advice that it does not matter what University, I am so pleased, it takes a load off my mind.

I really want to go to a prestigious University, but I do not think I can cut the difficulty.

But I think you're so right about work experience.

I am thinking to do a PHD when I finish my degree or/and masters.

I think I will go with UCP, however, I do not want to be looked down on .

Thanks Steve, you're a good adviser.

Yes, Steve, you are so right, Business Management is amazing, I enjoy it so much, my parents told me to do Computing because I had an interest when I was younger, but after studying Business for three years and having entrepreneurial spirit at a young age. I have considered Business Management.

You have saved my life Steve, I only wish there were many decent people like you everywhere in the world.

Thats alright, Im glad that I could have helped you. And if you do a degree at a not so prestigious university you can always do a postgraduate at a top university if you get above a 2.1 I personally know people who do OU degrees and go on to do a postgraduate at UCL so it can be done, but remember that it does not matter what university you go to because the proof of your management skills will be the experience that you will gain when managing your own business or managing a team of people, and quite frankly if anyone was to say to you that you were a crap manager because you went to a rubbish university can go and **** themselves because it will be evident that you are not with the amount of money you will be getting and the amount of experience that you will obtain. End of the day its us managers that help to keep businesses afloat through a recession and knowledge in business and experience is always needed and valued.

    Well said!

I think I am considering going into Management rather than Computing.

I think the major difficulty will come with persuading my parents :/

I'm currently a Business Management degree student myself.

You should choose whichever degree you think you will enjoy most while at the same time giving yourself the best launching point for a future career at the same time.

Don't worry about not cutting it etc., if you get into a Uni then it is obviously because they saw enough in you to admit you. If you put the work in and make use of the facilities available, you will be fine.

With regards to your parents, unless you 100% need them for financial support, don't let them be the decisive factor in your decision. At the end of the day it's your life, not theirs, and your future. You will be the one in the lectures, not them. Best of luck! Inbox me if you have any specific questions about Business Management I might be able to help with.

    Thanks for the advice Jimmy.

I have looked at the Business Management degrees at Open University and if I study at home, I would need to live under my parents roof, because working in a job will deter me from my studies. However, I will make use of the facilities, but that will mean attending the University, which my mum wants me to do once again, but I prefer not attending if the University is full of chavs, excuse my language.

I also want to study at a prestigious University.

I found an option with the help of my parents which is Creative Writing at Oxford University, it is prestigious and in relation to poetry which after all, I write poetry in my spare time and have a good reception in that.

But I fail to see how it will get me to my Masters, or meet my dreams.

Everyone is giving me advice based on what they want me to do. But not you guys.

I want to do Business Management at a good University, however, everyone says I am not listening.

However, this opportunity of developing my poetry will not make me rich which might develop my writing skills.

But I always aspired to be Bill Gates not William Shakespeare or Maya Angelou.

I know it is tough, but I hope I am making the right decision being a Business Manager. It is my decision and I want to be a Upper Class snobbish CEO or Business Manager with lots of money.

    I have always wanted that.

I think I should go for my dream and grab it

I don't see why not but like I say just because you have a degree from a prestigious uni doesn't mean you will be successful in management or for any uni for that matter. It all boils down to your experience in managing. Management is a career where you don't really need a degree in it and many managers will say that they didn't get a degree to become a manager but are earning a 6 figure salary. Your intentions to me sound as if you only want to become a manager for its status and for the ££££ where as my intention is to become a manager and make a successful business, create new jobs for people, and to create an even better shopping experience for my customers whether this be with my own business or managing another business. Sure money is motivational but the management status you get shouldn't be the reason you do this as a career. It should be the challenge that this type of career will bring you and to say you are going to be snobby. Good luck with managing a team of people because they will not warm to you. I think you may need to really consider if management is the career for you.

Maybe I should have explained a bit better, I am doing it to run a successful business too, I have always worked to managing businesses, I am not greedy at all, I am not going to be snobby I was just using a little humor.

However, I would like my businesses to be for the elite.

I have considered Management and I really like it for the prestige and running my own business and working for myself.

Also it is sad for you that you say teams will not warm to me, because I have made sure that they do, I have worked hard to build trust with my clients.

But when people doubt my ethics it is a shame as I am just trying to make my own decision.

However, please make a firm decision next time.

    Thanks.

In that case then go for it. Entrepreneurs are highly valued and respected people regardless of your background or qualifications because they help the economy, create new innovation, create new jobs etc. But I don't think poetry is a very good idea as it has nothing to do with management unless you plan on writing your own poetry and getting it published. Look only you know what you need to do to follow your dream. You only have one life so grasp your dream while you have the chance. So what universities have you been looking at

Thanks Steve, businesses to my knowledge are valued too, I go to small businesses and medium businesses for my goods and they have helped advise me and become more successful in my work ethic.

    Like you have.

You are also going to be successful.

I think I am looking at Anglia Ruskin University because it is near my home and I went to the University of Sheffield and studied Business Management and did not concentrate on my tasks which I have learned from now and am ready to fix my mistakes.

Now I am ready to focus on Business Management fully to achieve my goals.

I understand what you mean about money, there are many gold diggers in Business and I have met many, I feel really upset by them, because they were my mentors but they were really terrible mentors. My Sheffield University mentors were much more genuine. They did it for the excitement. Which is why I love it.

I think as Anglia Ruskin is near my house, I will go there and hopefully for my Masters go to Imperial College London as I was invited there on LinkedIn to study there for an MBA/MA in Management.

    Thank You.

And yeah we both will be successful because we both have a passion for business. And tbh I understand why your ambition is to become rich because that is also my ambition but becoming to focused on that ambition can lead to mistakes. that ambition will take time but one day with all the hard work and determination you will achieve it.

Thank you. Are you looking at the Chelmsford or Cambridge campus for Anglia. I would also suggest the uni of Essex, Westminster uni and Queen Mary depending on your qualifications.
