The 'black people and monkeys' outrage.
Does anyone else understand the link between monkeys and humans of black skin colour that causes so much outrage and nuclear bursts of calls of racism?
Is such a link historical or whence does this come? Why exactly is it racist to call a black man a monkey and not the same for a black man?
I've seen individuals of different skin colours who have close resemblances to many animals (some to our primate cousins), so personally I can't limit it to people of black skin tone.
Well? Any ideas?
P.S.
For example, Darwin and his brother Galton looked especially like our ape cousins with their fashionable (at that time) sideburns and haircut and yet, they're...white. -
Re: The 'black people and monkeys' outrage.
Tbh I get that Monkey remark a lot. Don't really get it either. It's an animal, I don't see how I should be offended by that, having said that, I don't take racist remarks seriously. My reply since year 10 has been the same whenever an idiot calls me a monkey. "We and the monkeys have evolved from the same branch of the evolution tree, really you are the idiot here because you clearly know **** all about who YOU are. Have a nice day."

Re: The 'black people and monkeys' outrage. But isn't that on an individual basis? I know of a number of people who resemble animals such as dolphins or even rats; but the issue here is that the 'monkey' name-calling and whatnot seems to be some sort of popular racial abuse against black people - this is what I can't understand. If a white person is called a monkey - this doesn't have the same outrage or seriousness.(Original post by im so academic)
Lots of people call certain women horses; they're not called racists. Unbelievable. So no, it's not racist to compare some humans to animals. Not everyone in the same race will look like an animal. -
Re: The 'black people and monkeys' outrage. Why do I find that funny? I'm black!! I think personally people just want to be offended, is it so hard to just laugh. Can't take life seriously, we are all going to die one day, why not enjoy the ride.(Original post by kaypc)
people used to call black people monkeys and some still do it now so it has racist associations like the N word. i watched a programme where someone was throwing banana's at a black guy and making monkey sounds so that's why it offends many people. -
Re: The 'black people and monkeys' outrage.
It is racist because of Historical references to blacks as monkeys to signify their inferiority to white people and how primitive they apparently behaved, also because of black people's skin colour. I guess monkey seemed to be a perfect fit.
However yes some people do resemble animals not exactly but maybe some features, but not a whole person and this comparison is regardless of race. -
Re: The 'black people and monkeys' outrage.Well you are not representative of the black population at large, personally I find it rude and it tend to be done out of general ignorance.(Original post by ipoop)

Example Lithuanian man at the Nigeria vs. Lithuania basketball match fined for making monkey sounds at the Nigerian players every time they passed the ball. -
Re: The 'black people and monkeys' outrage.Like I said earlier, I really give a toss about racist remarks. I have bigger things to worry about like passing my exams. I understand the historic relations of racism, I just don't see why it should relate to the present. So what if Nick Griffin says I am/look like/act like a monkey, I know I don't, people just want to be offended in my opinion.(Original post by hannah60000)

Gareth Bale looks like a monkey. -
Re: The 'black people and monkeys' outrage.I take the exact same attitude when people insult me. However, I hardly think it's fair to blast people who are sensitive to abuse (which is what racism is - the whole point is an attempt to intimidate/devalue someone) "people who just want to be offended".(Original post by ipoop)

Some things are ridiculous I agree - like if someone innocently refers to a black person a "coloured" person etc. - it's incredibly obvious they didn't mean anything by it so it's ridiculous to get angry over it. But throwing bananas and calling a black person a monkey - whether it bothers you personally or not - is a rather legitimate thing to get upset over in my opinion! -

Re: The 'black people and monkeys' outrage.
It depends on the situation.
A mother calling her child a cheeky monkey is humorous.
A person singling another person out apparently because of their skin colour in order take the mick and actually intend to insult like at the Spanish football game when the fans did the monkey chants/gestures an threw bananas at the black players is offensive.
People saying that others are just 'trying to be offended' where do you draw the line At bullying? Do people that suffer mental bullying jut need to toughen up?Last edited by amime; 11-08-2012 at 01:33. -
