Doing M3,M4,M5 STEP I,II and III and AEA during my gap year to apply to top uni's
Hi

I have just finished my A levels this year and I am currently waiting for my results on the 16th August 2012.
I have firmed Cass - Actuarial science and have Leeds as insurance - Mathematics. However I want to study maths at a TOP uni.
The problem is that I would like to go to uni's such as: UCL,Warwick, Oxbridge, Durham. I studied maths, further maths (AS FP1,FP2,FP3),economics and physics. Will these uni's consider me seeing as I would have to do my A levels over three years despite the fact that in my GAP YEAR I will do a tremendous load of mathematics which includes step I,II and III, AEA and M3,M4,M5.
Thank you for helping -

I spoke to Warwick about A levels over 3 years when my son was applying (he's determined to get to Warwick so if he doesn't get the grades this year he's planning a gap year and re-applying) and the message back was that you would still get an offer under their blanket offer policy but that it 'may be significantly higher than our usual standard offer'. Quite how you get significantly higher than A*A*A2/A*AA1 I dread to think, probably something along the lines of A*A*A11. There are people out there who have re-sat to get to Oxbridge but I have no experience with them.

Warwick this year was A*A*A2 or A*AA1.

What do you think you'll get in maths A level and further maths AS? Warwick will ALMOST certainly give you an offer if you get A*A in those.
Cambridge A*AA11 // A*AAS1 // A*AA12 - different colleges different offers. I believe the A* was further maths.

Oxford have a fourth term examination paper you will need to sit to get an interview. However if you do well in that you get an interview. Then if you do well in that an get an offer, Oxford is only A*A*A.
Imperial I believe gave out A*A*A + 2 in STEP2 or STEP3 this year (I don't know, I didn't apply there, don't like london enough)

UCL next year are making a joke of their entry requirements - I think they're changing them to A*A*A + STEP. Which is highh.

Durham is A*AA. A good insurance uni for maths.

Edit: All links are to 2013 entry requirements.
I think you will get an offer from any without too many questions about it. If you get good results this time round i'm sure you will get looked at fine. However they may ask you (at interview) why you didn't take further maths initially (this happened to me)Last edited by Tomcrease; 11-08-2012 at 09:47. -
Re: Doing M3,M4,M5 STEP I,II and III and AEA during my gap year to apply to top uni'sI think that's fine. They only dislike taking A-levels over 3 years if you are doing so to retake poor results. If you are taking a gap year to do A2 further maths and STEP, I see no problem (but make it 100% clear that that is what you're doing).(Original post by Gospelkid)

Re: Doing M3,M4,M5 STEP I,II and III and AEA during my gap year to apply to top uni'sYeah I remember UCL Mathematics lead admissions tutor specifically saying 'The university won't let us ask for 2 A*s even though that's generally what we look for, and we just see no point in asking for STEP as it can be very hit and miss'.(Original post by Tomcrease)

Oh but just as a correction, it's A*A*A or A*AA + 1 in STEP.

Re: Doing M3,M4,M5 STEP I,II and III and AEA during my gap year to apply to top uni'sAhh thanks, that was it. I still think UCL are getting a bit big for their boots with those requirements. However if you have a first choice uni with a STEP requirement I think the A*A*A alone could make it a nice insurance?(Original post by hassi94)

Re: Doing M3,M4,M5 STEP I,II and III and AEA during my gap year to apply to top uni'sI am in a similar position to you: I just finished my A-levels in maths and further maths, and want to take a gap year. During my gap year, I intend to complete AS and A2 in additional further maths, and also sit STEP II and III (sat STEP I this year).(Original post by Gospelkid)

A* maths
A further maths
A economics
A*-B physics not really sure on that one
You will almost certainly get a Warwick offer if you explain your situation on your personal statement with those grades.(Original post by Gospelkid)
which exam board hosts additional further maths?
And edexcel run additional further maths, I don't know about any others. As far as i'm aware edexcel has the most modules (18). -

Right, found it for Warwick! It was buried in the FAQ:
Question B3: I am only studying Further Maths at AS level. Will I still be made an offer?
Based on recent experience we would expect only 2% of our intake to be admitted with AS rather than A2 Further Maths, so we do encourage you to take A2 Further Maths if at all possible and, in any case, to include at least four of the Further Pure or Mechanics modules. We will consider applications for 2012 entry from those unable to continue beyond AS and, if you have or are predicted A*(M)a(FM)AA and have four A*'s at GCSE including Maths, then we would make you the rather demanding offer A*(M)a(FM)AA 1 2 (meaning grades 1 and 2 in two STEP papers).
