Or are you saying there are companies with 1000s of troops on standby to be hired? Plenty of countries exist with no army at all, like Iceland, I think it'd be a good idea for us to downsize to a smaller privately owned army.
The Italian city states tried private militaries in the middle ages. They were... unreliable.
Also, don't the swiss rely on a militia/national service system? I'm sure I remember reading they all have to have a rifle and ammo in the house in case of a wild abominable snowman attack or something.
