They actually don't have a choice I think.
I believe it is in the contract with National Lottery when you play so that they don't have the problem of people going "oh it's a fix, no one wins" and it encourages more people to play.

Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public?Well, I've done calculations. The total family debt isn't more than £100k. A good house (for two parents and one brother) wouldn't be more than £500k and they'll still have a few hundred thousand left for luxuries, holidays and a car etc. £1m to the older sibling would be more than enough at first. You've got to be prudent here - there have been numerous stories of jackpot winners giving large amounts to family members and friends only for those same people to spend it profusely, lose it all and have problems with drugs, alcohol and gambling. I'd merely give the money in trickles and help the family manage it and not give it all at once (also thereby avoiding hefty 'gift taxes'). I've even already budgeted extensively in my most hopeful of mindsets - for example, I wouldn't spend more than £15-20m on a country mansion/city penthouse/general residences etc. I'd try to have at least £100m or so left for investments and business and whatnot, so in theory, the family could get more as the years go by.(Original post by suncake)
I didn't see that before my post. But jeez, you've just won £148m, I'm sure you could be a little more generous with how much you give your family!
I'd actually still keep up at uni, but do a masters in MBA or something and then either become an investment banker and rise quickly and join a hedge fund and rise quickly or join a large business and rise quickly (either avenue would most probably see me earning hefty bonuses in a few years - thereby eventually dwarfing my lottery win). In short, ultimately, I hope to become a billionaire after winning the lottery - winning it would simply make it easier and quickier. Nevertheless, in real life, I still hope to become a billionaire, it's just that without such a hefty lottery win, it would be slower and more gradual.(Original post by thegodofgod)
I'd put the money in a bank account, quit my job and then just live off the interest earned
I'd try to keep it as private/undisclosed as possible, just to prevent public/media hassle, but in reality, it would come out soon anyway once I'd start spending my money...

Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public?Quite easily I would imagine actually. Unless you told people they wouldn't be able to work out whether you had won £10 million or £148 million (unless you did stupid things with it).(Original post by NWA)
Especially when its £148m, how are you supposed to hide that?
If I won £148 million I would give £140 million of it to good causes. -
Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public?
i have had a job and worked and would probably still work and carry on with life because i would prefer the self satisfaction of knowing id have worked for a particular car or house etc but to the main question and only question; no i wouldnt because as mentioned before people hound you for money and i cannot see any reason as to why people would want to except to say hey look at me look what ive got. 5 minutes of fame and perhaps there names in history maybe, nothing more

Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public?See my post number 24. I've since revised and clarified my position on that aspect. I wouldn't shower them with money - that could have potential problems as evidenced by past jackpot winners showering friends and family with lots of cash.(Original post by Astronomical)
If you won £143million you'd only give your parents £1million each? You cheap bastard.
If I won that sum of money I'd build my parents a villa on the beach in Vale do Lobo and a yacht, buy a new wardrobe, a London penthouse and then put the remaining £100million or so in a private bank until I'd finished studying. Having said that, considering I'd have no need to work, I'd probably just keep on studying.
I'd only go public once I'd finished studying, in order to attract publicity for the school for child geniuses I was setting up with some of my funds.

I wouldn't go public. It seems that whenever someone wins a lot of money, the tabloids fall all over themselves to dig up some dirt on them, and if they can't find anything, they just make a big deal out of nothing. I'd rather enjoy my money in peace.

Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public? Are you serious? Even if you believe you'd be alright with £8m, surely you could invest/save the £140m, thereby building it up well, so that in a few years, you could give nearly double that amount to 'good causes'. I don't get people who would want to give the majority to 'good causes' - a lot of the cash generated from lottery funds goes to 'good causes' anyway.(Original post by Tycho)

Personally, I'd want to build my wealth and personal fortune so that I'd eventually be a billionaire and be able to actually do much much more about those 'good causes'. -

If I won that much I would have a butler for everything, "thomson! put on my socks!", "Smith! Put on my shoes!" -
Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public?
Definitely not! Imagine being inundated with letters begging for money eeeeeverrry day. I'd buy my nan a house, pay my tuition fees for uni up front, still live in halls first year but then buy a small central flat
I'd take my fam out for a swish meal and send them on holiday. Then I'd donate a load of it, go travelling, learn to drive and buy a mini.
Then I'd probably get depression and end up a drug addict, after realising I have very little to do or aim for. -
Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public?Ah, I see. Fair enough, I can see the logic. I'd solve that problem by buying them things that they wouldn't otherwise be able to buy, rather than giving them money. That way the problems you described wouldn't even have a chance to develop.(Original post by UniversalAutocrat)

Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public?
I wouldn't even tell my own grandmother she would tell the whole town
and you could never trust a person again do they like you or do they want money? good luck in future relationships
there are ways of giving money to family without telling them set up some type of charity or something and give money through that so they don't know its from you.Last edited by Yellow_Watermelon; 13-08-2012 at 22:54. -

Re: £148m Euromillions winner(s) to go public tomorrow - would YOU go public?
I'd never tell the public only close family e.g. parents, grandparents, close aunties, close uncles and close cousins and my main friends and the ones who I could trust but don't see them as much. I would help them all out ... but first off I'd tell my best friend to stop smoking if they say they won't I'd do a Phoebe on them (from Friends) and bribe them to stop
and then give everyone that knows a couple million (minus parents who I'd set up for life) and see how it goes from their ... if they abuse the money and tell on me I'd cut them off
I'd hate people begging I'd help them if they seemed in trouble if it was a reasonable cause.

I'd take my fam out for a swish meal and send them on holiday. Then I'd donate a load of it, go travelling, learn to drive and buy a mini.
