By "grade whores", I assume you mean less academic.

no, performance at interviews, subject specific aptitude tests are more important and usually the deciding factors. i think this is better because with the right coaching anyone can ace A-Levels and those from poor schools will be at a disadvantage. interviews better differentiate candidates. for cambridge grades are still very important and this is reflected in their requirements.

well you shouldn't. oxford just aren't grade whores so their average ucas tariff may be lower

Actually average UCAS tariff goes

Cambridge
Oxford
Imperial
LSE

Dont see why people have been sucked into an Oxford vs LSE

But anyway the originally question, no it doesnt matter at all.

Wouldn't recommend applying for both with the same personal statement. Oxford would at the very least expect some mention of Philosophy and Politics whilst LSE are quite pedantic when it comes to personal statements especially for L101.

I think Government & Economics/Philosophy & Economics are reasonable substitutes for PPE at LSE.

With PPE, you will have to do all three subjects in your first year and then have the option of dropping one of them which lets you specialise within the other two. That said, if you're set on Economics - PPE just doesn't let you do as many optional modules (2 I think). Bottom line: choose what you like not what will make everyone go wow....banks would not differentiate between the two.

Thanks for the information! Would economics and philosophy still get me into investment banking though as economics would?

yes, you dont need a straight economics degree.
People go in IB with Spanish and philosophy. Economics is not required.
