Hey!

I was in Rutherford last year & absolutely loved it! Nothing echoes the University experience quite like Halls.
There's a great community atmosphere in Rutherford, we all dine together, hang out together & we stand together outside, half awake on those terrible nights with the random fire drills.
Each corridor has 7 rooms (with sinks), 2 showers, 1 toilet and a kitchenette. I never had any problems with the facilities, cleaners come into the corridor multiple times a week to clean the showers, toilet etc. I never had to wait for the shower or anything as everyone washes at different times & has different timetables so you never really get problems.

There's always something going on & there's plenty to do and corridor/room parties are crazy fun. And of course Peter Klappa aka Master of Rutherford is an absolute legend!

If you have any more questions or want to meet other Rutherford freshers check out this group

It's run by the Rutherford Student Committee (including myself - your Raise & Give Officer) - One of us is always floating around the internet so don't hesitate to contact us.

Hey Amy
Thanks for your help! I have to admit I was a bit nervous about getting Rutherford only because it wasn't one of my choices, but I'm feeling a lot better now and I'm looking forward to it!!

Thanks again

I have been offered a room in Rutherford West block and it wasn't one of my choices too.
Still haven't accepted it yet because it's part-catered, which is quite inconvenient for me ... I'm finding house outside too but this is my 1st year so it's just a little bit difficult .
Any advices on getting our meals and stuffs ?

Hello

Rutherford was the complete opposite to my original accommodation choices too, I originally wanted self-catered, so I was also fairly reluctant to accept.
In Rutherford you either get 6 free items at breakfast or £2 credit at dinner, I went for the dinner option most of the time. You pay for your main, ie. Lasagna, then you can add as much salad, vegetables etc as you want. There's also free water. (but if you want dessert or a drink from the canteen, you have to pay extra)
The main issue in Rutherford is the lack of a kitchen...there's a kitchenette in each kitchen with a fridge, microwave, sink & kettle. You learn over the year how to make the most of the kettle & microwave. You can cook rice, pasta, fish, potatoes, anything within reason, it just takes some getting used to.
But most of us opted for buying cereals, fruit etc for breakfast and a rutherford meal at dinner. For lunch there's the option of microwave cooking something /making a salad/ sandwich or buying something...you can buy food pretty much anywhere on campus.

It's not as bad as it sounds, and of course in the summer we have BBQ's etc and you can always befriend someone in self-catered and use their kitchen. (a lot of people also took toasters, kettles, grills, steamers etc...you're technically not allowed these items & they will be confiscated if found on inspection, but I know people who managed to hide mini fridges from house-keeping)

If you're really worried about it you can always look to swap with someone in self catered (make sure you contact kent hospitality if you're looking to do so). But honestly, the University tends to do a good job when allocating accommodation & it nearly always works out for the best. Plus Halls definitely add to the University experience & there's such a great community feel to Rutherford. I'm yet to meet a Rutherford student who disliked living there. The lack of an oven is literally one of the only negative points, besides having to completely vacate your room over Easter.
Just thought I'd say that the advice that Amy is giving out here is excellent and I 100% agree. I went through Clearing and was lucky to be living in Eliot (Rutherford and Eliot are pretty much the same, just different buildings).

Living in halls definitely adds to the experience and whilst it seems daunting now, its something that will become second nature to you in a short space of time!

Thank you for your advice, it's really helpful  Because I'm from overseas and in the past 2 years of living in UK I've always had problems with my college's food :P But anyway, I believe that it's gonna be much better here

Hey

No problem.

There's plenty to choose from in the Dining hall, so - something for everyone!

Popular meal choices include; salmon, pasta, curry, pie, stirfry, pizza, burgers, burritos, chicken, steak, breaded fish, baked/jacket potato, meatballs, cannelloni, lasagna, ribs etc etc

And if you're not hungry (and didn't get breakfast) you can always use your £2 credit to buy milk, juice etc

Hello

Quite a lot of East Blockers are posting on our fb group

https://www.facebook.com/groups/478712328819874/

Basic rooms are around 12 square meters. Each room has it's own sink & large window...so plenty of light. Rutherford rooms are actually fairly spacious considering the price etc. You can fit a surprisingly large number of people in the rooms!
There are 53 large rooms which are between 12-15 sqm and 10 extra large rooms which are over 15 sqm.

I had no problem with the size of my room as it was much bigger than my room at home! Last year I knew people in Rutherford who managed to fit Hammocks, ridiculously large beanbags, TV's & games consoles etc comfortably in their rooms...so there's no need to worry really

Thanks for the reply

Haha I guess I will stalk that page as I'm anxious to see who is my the same corridor as me! The room size sounds really good for the price I just hope the food is good haha. Does everyone keep their doors open or something because my friend was saying how only antisocial people keep their doors shut while they are in, something along those lines lool.
