Well, I wouldn't think the AS levels you dropped would disadvantage you too much but the choice of Graphic Design for A2 might. It really depends on the universities though, some might care, some might not. If you're really worried about it then email the universities and ask - it can't harm you! My sister did a lot of emailing at Sussex after her A-Levels as they were way under what they were asking but hey, she managed to get in!

What do people suggest for reading? I keep hearing Carr is over-used. So what else do people suggest?!?

Guys, I'm stuck on whether to do a joint History degree with Politics, International Relations, Economics ect. Or stick to single honours.... I want to be a History teacher so any advice is welcome!

I achieved four As at AS level and I'm currently studying Geography, History, Economics at A2 Level after dropping RS. Any suggestions of universities? I love Queens Belfast and have an interest in Irish History. I also want to be within/ close to a city and rugby is a big part of my life. Travel accessibility is very important, especially since I'm from Guernsey! Any suggestions are welcome....

I'm applying for History for 2013 entry. I got AAAB in my ASs (History, English Lit, Sociology and Politics) and am being predicted A*A*A for A2. I think I'm applying for:

Durham
Warwick
York
UEA
Kent

Although the A*AA (A* HAS to be history) for Durham is more than a little bit daunting. If I were to get an offer, there's no guarantee that I'd firm it.
Anybody going to the Warwick open day on 22nd?

I'm going to the Warwick open day! Having it on 12th May, just before our exams start, wasn't a good move by Warwick.
I'm also applying to York and UEA, and possibly Durham if I manage to get an A* prediction in the next few weeks.

12th May? Really? Wouldn't you have already chosen your firm and insurance by then?

No, it was 12th May 2012, so just before AS.

Hi, i've been thinking for a while now of studying history at uni but after i got my AS results (ABBC), my C was in history so now i'm carrying onto A2 with ABC and planning to resit a history module. do you think i'm making a mistake taking history as it's my lowest grade??... i was advised to drop history and not the B grade but i kept it on anyway, because if i go ahead with my plan to do history then i would prefer having it as an A level.
Hello!

Just wanted to suggest a few Uni's if you want to do History, I'm starting my History degree this September and I can't wait!

1) Canterbury Christchurch - is so sweet! You can do history and archeology and it is in a small but beautiful city, I put this as my insurance and if it wasn't for money then I would of gone here.

2) Cambridge Anglia Ruskin - though it isn't a Russell group Uni it does have the benefit of sharing the same location with one, it also has enthusiastic professors and in your first year you can go to Paris!

3) Roehampton - I have heard that this is a very good course and many students are more than satisfied.

The only Uni I would suggest not to apply to is Hertforshire as from what I heard, the course is very standard and the Uni focuses more on the Sciences and Business than the Hummanities.

For your PS (if your still doing it) it may be a good idea mentioning the historical significances of areas around you, for example I briefly mentioned tourist areas I live close to and how it affected my view on history.

I hope this helps and I will gladly answer any questions

Oh, that makes a lot more sense. My mistake, haha.

Carr is perhaps overused but for a good reason, he's pretty darn good. It depends on what sort of reading you want to do, expanding on a subject you already like is fantastic (and plus more likely to keep you interested in the reading). If you're looking for more History theory type books then I'd suggest maybe Tosh but don't be put off by Carr just because it's over-used.
Just wrote my PS....what a mare! Gonna join in on the old thread; I want to go to Cardiff to do History, or possibly Ancient and Medieval History, but I'm struggling for other choices. Got AAAA in my AS and I do History (obvs), Politics and English Lit. Anyone have any suggestions for unis which would be ok? I'm predicted A*/A AA at A level

ps how cool would it be if some of us ended up in uni together?
Heya. I'm thinking of applying for History and ancient history at Exeter and then History and American studies at Keele and Hertfordshire, I'm not sure about my other two choices yet!

Hey everyoen

I'm looking to apply for Ancient History/History at uni (so far only found 8 unis that do it!), but I have a problem that I'd like your advice on: I've chosen to do
History - A2, Bio - A2, Chem - A2 and Maths at A-level as the original plan was to do science at uni. But now, having got an E in Maths and a D in chem (retaking chem - i am striving for a B, which is what I was originally predicted!), and having realized my love of History, I have chosen to do this course instead. Where do I apply for History with a predictions of A* (History) BB and the possibility of getting a C in chem? :frown: I really picked the wrong A-levels! Help?

I did practically the same as you! In my first year I took: Chemistry, Biology, Physics and History, with a view to doing science at uni. Didn't do so well and really loved History, so I repeated the year and took: History, Geography, RS and Psychology (which I've now dropped) and will do History and Philosophy at university. I found that Kent (and Essex) were really good as all of their History courses were pretty much ABB

I'm applying to Uni for History AGAIN after messing up this Summer (and re-sitting some modules)... hopefully some places will take me  I'm thinking of Belfast or Kent at the minute.

Ooh, history applicants. I can't wait to go to uni, and I love history, so those two things probably go well together.
I got AAAAA in my AS levels earlier this year, carrying on English Lit, History, Maths and French. I'm thinking of applying to Oxford for definite, Kings College London (ooer A*AA), but I'm really struggling to pick out of my other choices. Any suggestions? So far I've got:
LSE
Warwick
Durham (another A*AA, great.)
UCL(?)
St. Andrews

and then I thought about Exeter or Sussex too, but to be honest I just can't make my mind up!

Look in detail at the course guides for all the possible unis you mention. Do they specialise in any periods or regions? Imagine yourself studying the compulsory modules, and choosing between the optional ones. Which courses now seem most interesting?

Also consider the environment in which you will be studying and living. Do you want an historic old city (eg Oxford or Durham)? A green campus on the edge of a town or city (York or Warwick)? A city-centre location (King's or UCL)?
Any current history students? UCL sounds soooo amazing!!
I have GCSE grades of 6 A*s and 5 A's. In my AS Levels I achieved:
History A
Geography A
English Literature B
Biology B

I have dropped Biology and my Eng lit wasn't far off an A, so I'm resubmitting coursework to bump that up to an A, too. What are my chances in terms of grades? And in terms of 'other' things like wider interest, what do you suggest?
Oh yes, and I heard that they ask for UMS scores, is this for all modules in each AS subject? I'm just worried as some are not that high, as I have a C in a Biology one...

In terms of grades I'd say your chances are good, as I'm guessing the minimum you'd be predicted for A2 would be AAB, but with your remark and things, it'd probably be more like AAA (or even A*, I don't know your specific grade mark! ) so that puts you in a reaaallly good position, lots of choices of good universities. Do extra reading on parts of History you like away or around the syllabus and just do things that interest you and gives you skills! Basically anything that tests your time management skills, motivational, leadership, confidence, organisation etc.

The only place that asks for UMS and really cares about it, from what I know, is Cambridge. So, if you're not applying to Cambridge, I wouldn't worry about your UMS too much.

Personal statement...blagh, hopefully nearly done with it. I'm at the point where I'm just sick of editing it. My teacher reference is ready to go so really it's just down to finishing the personal statement which is kind-of-really-scary-ah. Also got my predictions last week and...well, I think my teacher's are being a little too hopeful... (4A*...what.) Hope you're all well and not letting UCAS get you down!

I'm probably going to be predicted A*A*A!
Personal Statements are the most annoying things, EVER! And yeah in terms of extra reading I've done some and have extra curricular stuff too
Heyy, I was wondering if someone could help me
Basically I have a deferred place at Warwick for 2013 entry (as I am taking a GAP year) but I am thinking of reapplying to Oxford and rejecting Warwick. Last year I got an interview at Worcester college which was amazing but I didnt end up getting in, a lot of people are telling me that its a risk worth taking etc if I reject Warwick completely but I am not sure! I got 3 As for A2 so I would have to rewrite a personal statement etc
