Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadIve had 4 periods of this so far and i can truly say that it is so much better than the Higher. Its much more "mature" if that makes sense. Its a shame you couldn't do it, because its probably a unique Adv Higher that you could say is genuinely fun and interesting imo.(Original post by Hype en Ecosse)
Ah, I really wanted to take AH French as my 4th AH last year, but wasn't allowed. Either way, bon chance! -
Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadI only did Higher French but AH Spanish and I really, really would've liked to do AH French too!(Original post by animelover123)

I can help you a bit throughout the year if you like. Even though I didn't do AH French I might be choosing French as my third subject at the University of Edinburgh!
The success to an AH language is using really sophisticated language like force est de constater que (one cannot help stating that) or il faut bien souligner (it must be emphasised that). However, people in my class stuck with, in Spanish, je pense que which I wouldn't recommend.
Secondly, I would advise you to learn and master the subjunctive (tense/mood). That will give you the top marks when used successfully so make sure to use it a number of times in your essays.
Lastly, memorise and learn all important vocabulary for your topics. Use those in your essays whenever you can. Also, have good structure to your discursive essays: introduction, argument for, argument against and conclusion.
Needless to say, essays in modern languages were my strong point!
For reading, I would advise you to do as much practice as possible (LOADS of past papers and example reading papers) and also read newspapers equally. For listening, I would, again, do as much practice as possible (LOADS of past papers and example listening papers) and also listen to radios and songs. I have to stress that for the languages your main priority should be practicing exam style questions. I always used to listen to radios/songs and read newspapers but I was hopeless when it came to exams. You need to do BOTH. I know that people in my class could get away with just practicing but that won't assure you a solid grade so I would do both! Similarly, don't just listen to radios/songs and read newspapers without any practice whatsoever.
With regards to the folio, I would make sure to write that as soon as possible and keep re-drafting it. Apart from that, there's not much advice I can give on the folio as my teachers were, honestly, quite rubbish.
Good luck!

I was waiting for someone to start this thread ^_^ there's 5 or 6 people doing it at my school, is that a lot? And is it common for it to be an all girls class? Both my AH classes arw which seems unusual...
Have you chosen your books/background topic things for your folio yet?

i can have someone to discuss all things French!
Well, you have double the number of people in your class compared to mine
i only have 3 people: one girl another boy and me. The awkward thing is that most of the time during the non teaching periods me and this other boy sit in the Modern Languages base doing the work given to us, its silent because we have nothing in common, i don;t know him very well and neither of us make an effort to make convo lol, Other than that , I absolutely love the course .
We had a choice between 4 books and in the end we chose the easiest book ( in terms of vocab and plot) apparently it was because the other two hadn't done Higher English and they would have found in hard. Anyway, we are reading a book called " Poil de Carrote" ( It translates to Carrot Head...... don't ask
)
As for the Background topic , we were asked to think about what we wanted to do, and i was coming up with ideas and thought about racism in sport in France. I've not yet decided? Have you got any ideas?
So, how are you finding it so far? -
Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help Thread
I did Advanced Higher French last year, and just missed an A in the final exam (I'm very happy with my B though
) and will be studying French and German at Edinburgh Uni from September.
It's a really great course, so much better than the Higher. You learn so much more about France itself and you develop your language skills in so many new ways at the same time. It really was one of my favourite courses from school and I'm sure you'll all really enjoy it
Bonne chance tout le monde

Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadLast year I went to another school to do my AH Spanish. There were 7 of us at the beginning and then one person dropped the subject making it 6. Overall though, there were only two guys in the class (including me of course). But yeah, it's a well known fact that more girls than guys do languages and literature based courses.(Original post by EllieSaysHeya)

I've missed you
I'm glad you did well in your French and I guess I'll be seeing you at Edinburgh!
I can't wait
Even though I did the Spanish equivalent, I agree with _Stephieee - the course is really interesting and it allows you to improve your fluency in the language. In fact, after the course my speaking level was especially formidable!
P.S. _Stephieee you must PM me your e-mail address/facebook link so we don't lose contact again

We're lucky that we have AH French in our school, though, the downsid is that we only get 4 teaching periods, and the other periods are self study in the base or the library. This can cause problems because you feel like you have to put in a lot of effort yourself to be independent and shizz.... well, i guess that's the real world for me then haha
Also, in my 4 teaching periods i get 3 different teachers so i get 3 sets of homework every single week, which can be a real pain

Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadGosh, I wish they ran it in my school! I only get 2 teaching periods a week of AH Computing because it always clashes which is a pain(Original post by animelover123)

We have 3 different teachers too :') although they all seem like really good teachers and one hasn't given us any homework yet

Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadWe basically just do the work of the scholar books, the exercises in the book are so easy, a standard which is far to easy from the exam. Though, the instructions are in French, so sometimes I find myself looking to understand what the instructions are lol. How about you? You using scholar?(Original post by IAmCookie)

We also got told to invest in 2 books on French Vocab, and looking at them the vocab seems a big jump from Higher.
How you getting on so far? -
Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadI used Scholar for Higher French last year and I absolutely hated it haha! Although, my Scholar account this year only has AH Computing and doesn't have French on it hmmm...(Original post by animelover123)

We've not been told of any vocabulary books yet, so far we've just been given a Grammar book which doesn't actually seem too much of a jump considering I learned how to use the subjunctive last year
I think my teachers' current priorities are to get our two books read
Yeah I'm really enjoying the course! I'm one of those weirdos who just loves grammar so it was SO good revising how to conjugate irregular verbs yesterday! :P although tomorrow we have our double period of literature and I'm not really enjoying my play :/
How you finding it?
-
Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadWe get a double period in a Monday morning to do the literature, though i think we are only doing one book because we are also doing a background topic so that counts instead of the book( i think... don't quote me on this haha(Original post by IAmCookie)

I'm finding the course alright i suppose, im the kind of guy that love learning languages which is why im doing Spanish as well
. Today we had to translate an 8 page speech in French of President Hollande, it was sooo hard, we had to stop every 10 seconds and ask for help
.
What other subjects are you doing this year and what are you hoping to do in Uni? -
Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help Thread
Hi, I am in 6th year of school and after receiving an A1 in Higher French last year, I have decided I want to continue my studies into AH level. I am also studying higher Spanish this year. However, my school is not able to offer the course, nor is any surrounding schools. Because of this, the PT of the languages department suggested that I should download all of the course files required and teach myself it. I do have very high ability in French, and I received 25/25 for my Higher oral exam. My question is, has anyone ever done this before? If so, is it horrendously difficult or otherwise? And where did you download the stuff required to complete all course topics? Thanks

I would say its extremely difficult to do what is proposed to you. I am doing the course right know and i have 4 teaching periods and 2 self study periods. This structure is already difficult so i cant imagine how hard it will be for you.
Though, if you are talented, i would say give it a go, you never know until you tried
I don't really know what you are talking about in terms of course files but we just use scholar in my school.

Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadHey! Welcome to this thread! I agree, AH is much interesting than Higher. I am doing the literature with one teacher, the Education at Work Topic with another and the marriage topic also with another teacher. SO, often get 3 sets of homework which is quite bad. But i like French so i don't mind doing HW for it ( yep, im a weirdo(Original post by rawragee)
awh yay fellow Frenchies!
I'm really enjoying AH so far, it's much more relaxed and interesting although it is very difficult
I have nooooo idea what I want to do my second folio piece on though, my teacher keeps asking
$)
How are you finding the course so far? -
Re: Advanced Higher French 2012-2013: Discussion and Help ThreadMy teacher recommended me this book as well(Original post by _Stephieee)
If any of you don't already have it, I'd recommend getting a hold of 'Mot à Mot' for vocab. You can get it really cheaply from Amazon and it's full of great little phrases which are really relevant to the course
Have you used it before?
Also if you have which edition did you use because the newer edition is considerably more expensive than the older one:
NEW: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mot-New-Adva...6364229&sr=8-1
OLD: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mot-New-Adva...6364229&sr=8-3
Do you think it will matter which ever one i get?
. ( Obviously miuns the 20 minute speaking test with the examiner.
