Difference between film school and Uni film course?

What is it?
I believe (though there is a chance I could be incorrect), that they are pretty much the same thing. It's just a name for it. 'Film School' seems to be a term used more often in the USA I have noticed however. But basically yeah, they're the same thing.
If it's a place that specialises in Film then wouldn't they have better equipment and connections with employers and studios etc?
I went to an art school and they had equipment there a lot of us didn't even know about before going there and they had a lot of connections to artists, magazines, companies etc.

After reading MyNameIsRiley's comment, I could be thinking that it literally is a more seperate thing than it really is. There ARE art schools that focus on nothing but art related subjects. On the other hand, when I go into town I'm pretty sure I pass what is labelled as "Leeds Metropolitan's Law School" even though it's just really a department of a university that offers all sorts of courses :/
Interesting comment sliceofcake.

I googled Film School, not quite sure why I didn't do it beforehand. After skimming the Wiki article I believe that a Film School can count as part of a University. So like you said, the department of a University for Film Production could count as a form of 'Film School'. Well, I think so anyways.

Regardless, through research of which University to go to for Film Production. I've found only a number of recommended Universities offering the Film course, and have never heard anybody suggest going to an actual 'Film School'. So my guess is that there is no difference between the two.

Hi,

Well according to my experience and what my mates are doing there isn't really much difference. There are different type of film courses across the UK in universities that vary. Some just based on practical and some based on theory work, like the cultural side of things, society and history. On the other-hand some universities combine both theory and practical.

Film school im guessing emphasise on the practical side of things but I may be wrong. Best thing to do is check a few websites here are a few links you can click to check out the different types of film coures. Pay attention to the various courses as there are different types that most are not aware off. You'll be surprised.

May also help.

Hope that helps. All the best.
In very basic terms, University courses tend to be a more intellectual exercise and include more study on (for instance) the history of film, film 'movements', film criticism etc, whilst Film Schools tend to be more exclusively focussed on the more practical elements of actually making films.

Be careful of 'Film Schools' that are 'privately' run - they tend to be full of pretend glamour and not much content. Check out VERY carefully exactly what qualifications they are offering and if these are actually worth anything in the industry.
