Re: Islam: The Untold StoryHe wasn't so much using sources as showing the complete lack of sources, and being sceptical about how we can know anything about Islam's origins w/o those vital sources...that's what I understood was what he was doing anyway!(Original post by IdeasForLife)
Is it any good or is some guy using crappy sources and stuff?
Edit: Never mind friends confirmed it was rubbish. -
Islam- Untold story on Channel 4
Just finished watching this documentary on C4, as with most 'documentaries' on that channel, it doesnt really answer any points, but watching reminded me of various debates that have been had on TSR- the point it was making was primarily that islam in historical record was very much non -existent till a hundred plus years after mohammeds death, where upon islamic scholars then compiled and used various biographies of mohammeds life to form the basis of the religious rules and practices.
one point at the start that was interesting was an old arab bedouin stating that before mohammed, arabs used to bury alive their daughters, to which the historican narrating was querying how this man knew this and where the written record came from. I was also wondering how the arab race managed to exist if they were continually exterminating the female gender on a widescale basis.
The historians where obviously trying to piece together factual evidence to see whether the islamic traditions and in particular the hadith scanned true or not. Do you think they did so, having watched the programme? -

I just had a thread, before noticing this one had already been made , the pint they made was primarily that islam in historical record was very much non -existent till a hundred plus years after mohammeds death, where upon islamic scholars then compiled and used various biographies of mohammeds life to form the basis of the religious rules and practices.

Re: Islam: The Untold StoryAnd how did they come-out with that hypothesis? Or is it fact to them?(Original post by Indo-Chinese Food)

That so called documentary was the biggest waste of time ever.
That guy wanted to find the "untold stories" of Islam yet he went to anyone and everyone apart from ISLAMIC SCHOLARS. I was so confused til he admitted that he's a Christian, no wonder that "documentary" was filled with utter bull****. Not surprising since it is a Channel 4 show.

Re: Islam- Untold story on Channel 4The reason he didn't go to islamic scholars because perhaps he thought they would give them a biased view i.e. "islam existed since the dawn of time"?(Original post by HelloGoodbye)

Re: Islam: The Untold Story(Original post by kka25)
And how did they come-out with that hypothesis? Or is it fact to them?
it is fact that there is little or no historical record fo islam existing till about a hundred years after mohammed - this was most certainly put together by the remnants fo his follwers and armies. C4 make the point that orignally jerusalem was named as the islamic holy city ( after it was captured by the arabs) mecca was not. mecca became so much later -
Re: Islam- Untold story on Channel 4In that case, the title is valid; of course the content is a different matter.(Original post by S-man10)

*I just replied to the same exact thread somewhere on the forum lol. -
Re: Islam- Untold story on Channel 4
Im watching this now on channel 4 +1 and reading my twitter timeline from the period this was on. It seems a lot of my muslim followers are tweeting negative things about this show saying its made up and incorrect and Muslims shouldn't watch a documentary about Islam made by a kaffir.
Can someone explain what is so controversial or wrong about the articles discussed?Last edited by Charzhino; 29-08-2012 at 00:59. -

Re: Islam- Untold story on Channel 4Just cos a lot of people bury their daughters doesn't mean the whole race will cease to exist. Look at India. Widespread female infanticide, but there's no shortage of Indians.(Original post by Indo-Chinese Food)
JI was also wondering how the arab race managed to exist if they were continually exterminating the female gender on a widescale basis. -
Re: Islam- Untold story on Channel 4a practicing historian would not regard a 3rd party hearsay written 100 years after the event as sound historical evidence- which is effectively hat islamic hadith.(Original post by HelloGoodbye)

The records of the defeated christians of 8th century jerusalem didnt mention islam, only an invasion of arab armies, who took the city and prayed in jewish temples - which is what C4 stated -
Re: Islam- Untold story on Channel 4I'm not too sure whether they managed to do so but the documentary showed that Islam has a lot of things to answer for. The lack of historical backing/evidence for the origins of the religion is quite embarassing.(Original post by Indo-Chinese Food)

I mean...how long did it take until some warlord decided to put Muhammad in their coins? And I almost laughed at the part where they managed to find some kind of mosque that was not based in Mecca nor did face Mecca.
