Uni at 25? Mature student or fresher?

Hello

Am I really a mature student at 25? So far Hull uni have invited me to mature student lunches and no invites for freshers :frown: Even though I am 25, I look about 20 - I don't think the 'mature students' will take me seriously.

Is there any one in a similar boat? Am I too old to be a fresher?

You are a mature student  but of course you can still do all the fresher's stuff if you want to! You're as old as you think/feel you are!

But don't just skip the mature student socials in fresher's week! Those are nice as well!

I'm 27 now, was 26 when I came to Hull (as a third year) and well.. I fit in more with the mature students, but if you still like to party and mingle with the younger ones: do!

I'm only 22 and I'm classed as a Mature Student too.

I made the mistake of going to one of the Summer Schools just so I could meet some of the other Mature Students and, honestly, it was horrific.
I'm pretty sure I was the only one there under 30, and they all kept making comments like, "Oh, I don't think I'll be doing Freshers, I don't want to get babysitter for the whole week!" and "We went away this Summer. We even stayed up past MIDNIGHT! Normally it gets to 10pm and we're straight to bed!"
The things they all mentioned doing in their spare time were things like watching Coronation Street and cleaning the house. Not one of them mentioned going out or socialising

I was really looking forward to meeting the other Mature Students because I don't really wanna hang out with a load of 18 year-olds when I get to Uni, but all the ones I've met so far are all middle aged and seem to want to spend all their time whinging about their kids :frown:

The mature students I know are awesome and none of them have kids  Same here! Don't even want them and I avoid people whining about them or even talk about them at all costs!

Wednesday night in Freshers Week is the mature students social, I believe, I'm going with a few of my friends and we're going to have a good time, so feel free to join us!

I'm sure I'll poke my head around the door and see what you guys are up to at some point. I think that's the same night as the Societies meet up thing and there's a couple of Societies I'm thinking of checking out, so I'm sure I'll be wandering around
im 24 and ive been invited to just freshers?!?! at a different uni though...

Pretty sure I got a letter the other day for freshers though aswell.

Just waiting on my letter now to tell me which day and time I'll be starting, so I can go in and register etc or whatever it is you do on your first day.

I'm in a similar boat, I'm 23! I have been invited to the mature student lunch, I've decided to go because I figure it might not be as awkward as the evening mature social ! With regards to freshers week, I'm not too sure where I'm going to go out, as I want to socialise and meet new people but don't want to have to deal with really drunk 18 year olds!?
What's having kids got to do with being a mature student? I've met real freshers who have kids. When you get your welcome pack it has something in it from union with a timetable of nights out, think thats classed as your invite. The best way to meet people is by joining societies and of course sitting with people in lectures etc.

I think you are considered a mature student if you're older than 21. But you can still take part in all the parties and stuff during Freshers though, you're not 50
There will probably be loads of people in the same boat as you so don't worry, at my uni one in three of it's applicants were over 21.
whats wrong with being over 30 and moaning about ur kids? nothing wrong with corrie! and yeah as parents we worry about stuff like babysitters! im 30, i have a kid and im soon to become a mature student, i wont talk about my little one all the time as i will be studying! u can still go to freshers, i will be. all the above said i will be enjoying freshers week and will be partying with the best of them!

I myself hate children in general, I ignore all people I have on Facebook who can only post about their children once they got them and I prefer to hang out with people who don't have children because I couldn't care less about whether little Timmie took his first dump on the toilet or little Isabel taking her first steps. That doesn't mean I believe there's something wrong with that, I myself just avoid parents like that at all costs because I don't like it and I really understand leighmarie being afraid that all mature students are like the ones she met.

Im 23 so I am classed as a mature student. I have been invited to both the mature student lunch and freshers week, I think your welcome pack is your invite for freshers week. Im going to both. I think mature students will take you seriously if your mature and not being stupid like some 18yr olds can be like.
Well I'm 22 and look my age (maybe a tad older.. :/) and I'm going to the lunch. I really don't think you'll be the odd one out.)

Nothing to stop you partying with the freshers. I'm not a mature student (I'm 25, but a postgrad - so "normal age") but I'm far more involved with clubs / societies than is normal for a postgrad to be, so a lot of my Bristol friends are younger. Nobody seems to care :p: They just tease me that I'm old when I call it a night at midnight

Same here, up to a certain point  I 'attract' more mature freshers and students up to 20, however, also mature students who are not as carried away with being 'grown up' as most of their age-group. Sort of 'in the middle': not really a fresher and I certainly don't go out that often and I feel my age catching up on me when I do   but also still years away from (and maybe even avoiding it for ever) 'mature life'. Not wanting any children helps with that, I guess!

received my formal acceptance yesterday and myadmin.hull.ac.uk shows that everything is ready to go for 2012-13! Can't wait!

I am 35 and as well as going to the mature student's lunch and evening, I will be partying along with all the other freshers that week.

I may not last the whole week though, I am not sure my ageing body will be able to take it.

hmm.. well i started uni at 19 and i was the youngest out of my group of friends in halls, so i dont think you would be a mature student! as long as your cool with some of the things youre gonna see and not get offended like the actual mature students do, youll be fine!
I'm 31 :frown: and I have kids...I don't talk about them unless someone asks (my private/home life stays that way)
I'm worried where I will fit as I don't look 31 and I certainly don't act like it at times ;P
