Art and Design Foundation courses.

The time to apply to UCAS and that is coming soon and I'm a bit confused. I know that I'm going to apply to an art and design foundation course to start in 2013, looking at Oxford Brookes and Loughborough, but I don't whether to apply for degrees through UCAS as well like everyone else. I know my school will push for me to go through the UCAS process but I don't know if there is any point doing that now, this year, if I intent to apply for a foundation course. Anyone in the same position or has experience in this type of thing?

Yep I'm the same. I'm definitely applying to Art Foundation courses but I don't know whether to apply to other things in case or not.
Some degrees let you apply for deferred entry-have you thought about maybe doing that?

Yeah I was thinking of doing that, if I got an offer. But would the better universities, which I assume would be our first choices, give an offer despite not taking a foundation and having a less developed portfolio? Obviously the foundation course is to develop our skills and I don't know about you but my portfolio (when I get round to making it properly) won't be like degree standard, so I'm thinking I wouldn't get a good offer this year with my current work and A-level stuff. Today my form tutor told me it wouldn't be a bad idea to apply for degrees but I'm just wondering if there is any point. :dontknow:

Well I guess if you don't try you don't know!
The thing is, some people I know that are applying for foundation courses are applying for degree courses at the same time, but not art degrees, just degrees in a subject they find interesting. I guess that's more of a back-up in a way?

Only one way to find out haha, I'm going to go for it. And that sounds like a good idea actually I hadn't even thought about other degrees! Where are you planning to do your foundation? All the open days I want to go to are in October.

Hopefully Falmouth, but it's quite competitive so I don't know if I will get in. How about you? Good luck with whatever you decide.

I've heard Falmouth is really good, what do you need to get in? And Oxford Brookes and Loughborough I'm thinking, but I've recently found out that if I applied for a course from the University Arts London colleges I could live with a mate in the city. Good luck to you too :cute:

Falmouth is more about the project they set rather than the grades really. What do you need for where you are applying?

Be warned, ucas take £20 off you for the hassle of it

Generally, I'd say you're more likely to get a place at one of the top places with a foundation...some places do offer four year degrees which incorporate a foundation year. But applying for an outside subject sounds like a rather cunning plan

Last year when I was applying (for fashion design) I was told I wouldn't get into a BA straight away because they all require foundations, but I was stubborn and applied anyway as well as to foundations (as a safety net). If you know you definitely don't want to go on a BA straight away then don't bother, but I know youve mentioned Oxford brookes and Loughborough, just bare in mind that you don't get student funding for accommodation and that costs around £4000 so it might be best to stay local as most FDA student do

Didn't apply for Falmouth in the end, and I've sent off the CSM form this week. The open day really impressed me

Hello! My name is Eliel and I am UCA representative and also a current student there. I have been doing photography for 2 years now.

I read you were asking about foundation courses across the UK and though you would be interested in our pre-dregree foundation programs at UCA. I don't know if you have heard of UCA before. The University for the Creative Arts is one of the leading providers of specialist art and design education in Europe. We are a diverse community of about 7,000 students from more than 70 countries and are based around five campuses in Surrey and Kent.

Our foundation diplomas in Art and Design at UCA are focused on developing the student's interest in the arts at many levels and different areas. To achieve this we have a very varied curriculum where you get to explore different art subjects and then choose the one you would like to specialize in. For more information on the foundation programs please visit http://www.ucreative.ac.uk/pre-degree

When looking at then undertaking a degree, we have an internal progression scheme (IPS) which guarantees your place on a degree course at UCA, providing you get the support of your Tutor and Course Leader and successfully pass your foundation course.

As I said before, I am a current student at UCA and have been for almost 2 years now so if you have any questions rewarding student life or anything else please don't hesitate to ask.

Hope you find this useful.

Hi there, I'm applying for AUCB! I'm not quite sure how "good" it really is (don't have much to compare it to) but I visited the uni and was really, really impressed. It's my first choice at the moment ^^ The course has UAL accreditation (I think) so it should be as good as the London unis - at any rate the campus library/facilities were really nice and, at the very least, better equipped than a local college may be.*

I was told that during the foundation course, you're encouraged to be pretty experimental - it's more about pushing your boundaries that producing perfect work 100% of the time which sounded fine to me  The course is apparently divided into smaller tutor groups so you have someone to ask for help etc.

The people are really nice too - I met one of the foundation tutors while I was there and she seemed very approachable and professional. Right now I'm finalising the application and have sent quite a few questions to admissions; they've gotten back to me in under 24 hours so they've been helpful!

It looks like a great course to me and the fact that BA courses seem to have high student satisfaction and employment doesn't hurt. ^^

Thank you very much!!!! I just wanted to know more about it as I don't really know much! I just applied because a friend wanted to go and I got in. Do you know if the tutors are helpful/ class sizes are small? I heard that in UAL has limited tutoring time since there is a lot of people. Have you gotten an offer yet? Thank you so muchhh!!!

No problem! CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR OFFER, that's great!! I'm not sure how big the classes are but when I visited I think they said around 20 people? I visited a couple of unis while over in the UK and to me AUCB made the most effort to show people the campus/explain the course so I hope that reflects the effort the tutors put in with their students, ahaha! Otherwise I don't know, maybe you could look for some of the past foundation students on here and ask them?

I haven't sent my application off yet but I'm planning to do that tomorrow (need to be at school to scan the last things argh!).

I'm so scared I won't get in eeeeeeeeeeeeeek :s-smilie:

Just a general question to the people who may be reading this thread - any opinions on my portfolio? As I'm sending it off tomorrow I thought I'd ask! It's missing some work at the moment (I'm going to put in some life and observational drawing from my personal sketchbook as well as the self-portraiture I used as development work for one of my final pieces). I'm worried my sketchbook has too much writing but hopefully that will seem less apparent once I put the rest in! Still need to write the titles and descriptions too grr

Haha no problem, and thanks for the encouragement  I visited Loughborough and Oxford Brookes, really liked Loughborough! Brookes was nice but wasn't my kind of place  Where else have you applied? Any idea what you want to specialise in afterwards? xx
