RAF PTI Specialist Vetting

Hi,

I've got my RAF PTI specialist vetting on the 24th September. Anyone going down on this date? How are you getting on with training for it etc? And any idea as to when we might start basic training if we got through?

Cheers

Hi,

Iv got mine on the same date. My training is going well, how are you getting on? No idea when basic training might start. What is your email address? Maybe we could chat more through email rather than on here.

Cheers,

Good work on the 2.4km run. I ran it last week in 8.11mins, so if I can do that again on the day I will be happy. I sent you an email... did you not get it?

Vetting is something different - this is the PTI Specialist Interview.

It's not just a matter of how fit you are, though they will look at the amount ot effort you put in - don't hold back because you have more phys sessions later. They will also look very closely at technique, and swimming is one of the areas that a lot of people struggle with for this. You will also have to be able to deliver coaching, so you'll be shown how to do something, eg a shot at badminton, and then you have to pass this on to the other candidates.

Thank you for the your advice! Any advice is always welcomed.

I notice someone on a similar thread recently had argued about the name of this, I don't want to argue and mean this in a nice way but here is a direct quote from the letter that the Royal Air Force has sent me.

"JOINING INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SPECIALIST VETTING - PHYSICAL TRAINING INSTRUCTOR" and then continues to say in the Introduction, "You have been selected to attend a Specialist Vetting for the Physical Training Instructor Trade..."

Sorry for any confusion but this is what it says.

Hi Guys,

Just come across this thread whilst trying to search for information on RAF Physical Training Instructor (PTI). I've seen a small section of information on the RAF website, however, I thought TSR would have more threads on the branch. Can you guys link me to any other informative threads?

Also, how did you both get on at the specialist vetting? What training did you do in preparation?

If you could get back to me on the thread, or by PM, that would be much appreciated.

Hi,

not sure about other threads but I'll tell you a bit about it.

you register your interest (go to afco/ring up careers line) then when pti role opens you will sit an aptitude test. If you pass this you will do an interview with the raf and then a medical. All being well you will attend a specialist vetting at cosford. The vetting involves multiple fitness and strength tests as well as interviews and team leading exercises. You must be able to swim WELL, this is the most important part.

i passed the vetting but unfortunately due to me still being young (18) and 'inexperienced' as well as my swimming being quite weak, they did not take me on this time, but invited me to apply next year again.

hope this helps, any questions just ask!
good luck with it!

Thanks for your reply.

How long did it take you from the initial visiting day at the AFCO to attendance at a specialist vetting? (Obviously if the branch is not open it will be longer.)

I have heard a lot about swimming being a major part of the selection. What preparation did you do before hand to set yourself up?

Unfortunate that you were unsuccessful, however, take the positives from it as I am sure you will have. You will have more experience next time you attend compared with the majority of the selection board and will also have a lot more time to prepare yourself physically for the tests and to improve your swimming.

Hi

I registered my interest and it was about 10 months after that the role opened for applications.

I had a friend who was a district swimmer give me some tips but this wasn't enough, my feedback was that my technique needed work so it would be well worth getting lessons to improve strokes.

thats what I'm looking to do. Will probably go to uni and get experience there, then reapply when I'm 21 as it is something I really want to do and the lifestyle looks great. The vetting at cosford sold it to me!

any more questions feel free to ask
Luke

ps sorry for the late reply, been a busy time with Xmas and exams etc
